Niko’s roster construction

In 1997, Gopher basketball is all anyone wanted to talk about with me because they knew we had season tickets. My work colleague and her husband--NDSU alumni from Minnesota--were living and dying with the team's games. I don't remember now much scalped tickets were going for, but getting ahold of any was a coup.

They were on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Once they got into the top 10, the local media was all over the story, including even MPR. The whole city was in a hangover the night and next day after they lost to Kentucky. It was a phenomenon.
Are you sure about that?

The first time I kissed a girl was watching that game...I should have known it wouldn't work out when they lost ;)

And I find no cover of Sports Illustrated...

Now I'm questioning it myself. I need to look in my box of memorabilia. The title on the cover was "Gopher Ball." I don't think I could have imagined that. Did they have regional editions? Stay tuned on this.

I have the issue...or at least I THINK I do, haha. I'll re-check.
I used to get it every week back then. I feel like I'd have kept that one. Unless my mom mistook it for the swimsuit issue and threw it out...

I don't remember the issue you are referencing, but Sports Illustrated absolutely has utilized regional covers many times.

Maybe a commemorative cover of some kind but not one that was actually on the magazine?

Not on the cover, but here is an article from 1997 called "Gopher Ball."

That has got to be it, and my false memory of it being on the cover. The mind is a funny thing.

I'm still going to find that puppy and make sure it sees the light of day again.

I hear you, but it's not like making an order from Amazon or in the McDonald's drive-through. You have to have athletes willing to take a leap of faith that Minnesota will truly turn the thing around. We're kinda damaged goods.

Of course, I'm going to debate myself by referencing what Coach O pulled off at Iowa State. They were coming off a disastrous year, and that didn't seem to matter.

To quote Fiddler on the Roof, on the other hand...it IS a different deal to overcome YEARS of doldrums and decline, which has people like Seth Davis badmouthing the program, the school, the community, and all the horses we rode in on. Let's face it: this is a stubborn horse to break.
Wiser words could not be said regarding the program. The program needs to evolve, show progress and as all writers know, don't tell the story. Let it show itself to the world. This is what makes the next few years glorious. We might not start off with a clear turnaround. That might be in year two. But the seeds need to germinate and sometimes that requires the seed to go through a freeze cycle or two. When it germinates, then we will see that takeoff growth we are all hoping for. That is when things will begin to feel 'easier' when it blooms.

What you say about our program history is true...making it all the more insane that we hired a guy who had never been a head coach- anywhere- to do it last time. If we have the right coach and competitive money, that's two of the three major elements. He can get this done and fairly quickly.
