NFL Combine Thread! Best of luck to our 3 Gophers!

He measured 5' 10 5/8", which was already know to all the scouts because he was measured at the senior bowl. His vertical and relatively long arms will negate some height concerns, and are what allowed him to "play bigger" than his listed size.

In regards to his 40 being average, he was tied for 14th out of 32 CBs who ran, and better than the NFL average of about 4.55. So better than average. And he did well in other drills too, 3rd in vertical, 7th in broad jump, 5th in the shuttle, 15th in 3 cone, 15th in bench press. When you're average in your worst drill and top 5/10 in your best drills, that's a good combine.

Right, I'd be interested to see who among those 32 finished 15th or better in all of the drills. I'd bet that there weren't many.

So basically like I said, he didn't really do anything to improve his stock. The vertical was a good look. He didn't really hurt his stock but didn't really raise it either. He's billed as a press corner but his size and speed are just average across the board. Like I said before he plays better than those numbers show so I think his stock will probably be the same as it always was. Somewhere between 2nd and 5th round, most likely a 3-4 guy. I thought a really good combine could bump him up a bit

Actually disagree. He didn't have a 'bad' combine but it wasn't great. He measured at 5'10", not the 6' he'd been listed as. His 4.49 is fine but not attention grabbing. As a guy seen as a press man corner running a fairly average time along with average height isn't really doing him any favors. I do believe that he plays both bigger and faster than his workouts showed as size and speed were never issues for him despite essentially playing on an island for 3 full seasons. Just saying I don't think he did anything to improve his stock in the combine, at least not with the measurement drills

Totally agree. He should have worked harder to get to 6'.

Eric Murray is considered a "riser" in the draft based on his combine performance (per the attached link)

I'm pretty impressed at how our Gophers (usually low star ratings) measure up against the rest of the country in recent combines. It points to a good strength and conditioning program.

Murray also has to be considered one of the better run support corners. He has always made very good tackles at the line of scrimmage.

I think you make some good points, but Oleboy also pointed out that Murray has played (and is billed as) a press man corner. In the NFL, corners that excel playing man coverage outside the numbers are almost exclusively either tall or fast and usually are both. If the NFL average for a CB is a 4.55 (curious as to where you found that), then that also includes guys who play primarily in the slot and guys who play in zone schemes and in both of those situations long speed is not as important. You are going to have to be a technician at 5 '10 5/8 and 4.50 to be a guy who wins in man coverage in the NFL and most would agree Eric has a ways to go in that area (a lot of people mentioned him using his hands too much downfield ala Trae Waynes in Senior Bowl practice reports).

per Sid:

• Former Gopher De’Vondre Campbell ran a 4.56 40-yard dash at the NFL combine, the third-fastest time of any linebacker attending the tryouts. … Former Gophers cornerback Eric Murray also performed well at the combine. Murray ran the 40-yard dash in 4.49 seconds, which tied for 16th among the defensive backs who competed. His vertical jump of 39½ inches ranked fourth, and his standing broad jump of 10-3 tied for 11th.

I do agree that Murray is a little short, I just don't think he's too short to be an outside corner. He'll be listed at 5'11 for the rest of his career, which is in line with a lot of the top CBs in the league... Revis, Harris, Haden, etc. Especially with his long arms and vertical/broad jump scores adding to his range. We'll see where he winds up but my guess is he'll be a 2nd/3rd round pick and will start his career as an outside corner somewhere.

What exactly is wrong with wikipedia? I'm sure you noted that the data was assembled using the combine numbers from the past several seasons. Invalidated indeed.

So he didn't finish top 15 in everything? I feel lied to.

There have been studies published that have shown wikipedia is just as accurate as any published encyclopedia.

I wouldn't be surprised to find it even more accurate, given that it's crowd sourced and not a small subset of people.

I believe you are correct but didn't want to give spoofin the ammo just in case the studies only showed wikipedia is just as accurate and not more accurate.

Relax. It was a line from The Office. Direct your anger at Michael Scott if you don't like it.

per Shooter:

Eric Murray didn’t have a stellar NFL combine, but his height, weight, speed and other measurables are expected to make him the highest-taken Gopher in the NFL draft, probably in the fourth round.

De’Vondre Campbell had a nice combine, but there’s a question of what position he can play, and he should be a free-agent signing. The same for Theiren Cockran. Other Gophers: Briean Boddy-Calhoun could be a late-round pick. Punter Peter Mortell will get a free agent deal.

Murray, Campbell and Boddy-Calhoun might sit on their combine speeds and not run at Monday’s pro day at Minnesota.
