I'm curious if you had to set the betting line for the number of Gopher wins next year, what would Gopherholers pick? We have a tougher schedule next year, with TCU in the non-conference schedule and OSU at home.

Date Opponent Location
Ths, Aug 28 Eastern Illinois TCF Bank Stadium
Sat, Sep 06 Middle Tennessee State TCF Bank Stadium
Sat, Sep 13 at TCU Fort Worth, Texas
Sat, Sep 20 San Jose State TCF Bank Stadium
Sat, Sep 27 at Michigan * Ann Arbor, Mich.
Sat, Oct 11 Northwestern *^ TCF Bank Stadium
Sat, Oct 18 Purdue *^ TCF Bank Stadium
Sat, Oct 25 at Illinois *^ Champaign, Ill.
Sat, Nov 08 Iowa *^ TCF Bank Stadium
Sat, Nov 15 Ohio State * TCF Bank Stadium
Sat, Nov 22 at Nebraska *^ Lincoln, Neb.
Sat, Nov 29 at Wisconsin *^ Madison, Wis.

My line right now would be 7.5 wins.

This team needs to be 7-1 or 8-0 going into final four games.

Could happen. The only tough games we have in our first 8 games are TCU, Michigan, and Northwestern.

It's also possible we lose those 3 games and fail to make a bowl.

Our DBs are kind of a bunch of bad@sses I love what we have coming back. Our lbers will miss Manuel but Hill was exposed for what he is yesterday and we will be better within that group. Our dl will be fine Hageman only played about 1/3 of the time anyway and the rest got valuable experience. Our WR next year will take a big step up. Our Rb situation should be better than average in the B1G. Our OL should be better I hope we see some youngsters like Pirsig break into the lineup and that our injured guys come back. Our special teams are generally special and that should continue. Claeys is solid and Kill seems to be doing better. That leaves Limegrover and our QB situation. Both are such a wildcard I'd say we could win between 4 and 10 games. We just don't know how either will perform but this year certainly left more questions than answers.

I see 6 wins but because I'm an optimist I'll set the O/U at 6.5.

why is everyone so afraid of TCU? Boykin is not a great QB, their D is a shadow of what it was a few years ago, we should've gotten our QB situation (at least I hope to god we have by then) worked out. The only thing is it's a road game. Don't get me wrong, it will be tough, but it's not one of the toughest games on our slate by a long shot.

I'd set the O/U at 7.5 as we should sweep the non-con schedule and beat Purdue and Ill for sure. Then we've got Mich, NW, Iowa, OSU, Neb, and Wisc which are going to be tough games but I'd say we beat NW and win at least 1 of 3 against Iowa, Wisc, or Neb to get to 8 wins. The only game I don't really see us having much of a shot is OSU. Michigan will be difficult as well. We'll see who ends up leaving early for several of these teams too and what happens on the coaching carousel and with transfers but I'd say 8 wins is a realistic expectation given that our WR's get another year to mature and they were showing some good signs especially in the bowl game, our QB play should improve as you have to imagine someone is going to assert himself into the role, and our secondary should be solid again. I'm hopeful we will see an improvement on our record from this year to next yet again.

I'd agree with that, but with this offseason we will see if one of these guys has really got it. It's their 3rd year in the system so the playbook should be old hat. Now it's going to be who can command the offense and have respect and faith put in him by his teammates. I love Leidner's fire, but his general awareness is poor. That should improve. Phil seems like he has the mechanical tools and physical skills, his head is just screwed on a little too tight at times so he rushes himself. These things are both correctable with reps and gaining confidence. I feel someone will assert themselves and take the job and if they don't at this point, who knows, Streveler might show that he's what Kill's looking for

if that's your logic then we should be afraid of Purdue and Illinois as well.

I should have been clearer. TCU is on about the same level as Syracuse. Purdue and Illinois are not competitive teams right now.

6.5
9.0 if jones comes over!

If Jeff Jones comes here, he should be red-shirted. I can't see him making an impact with Cobb, Williams, Kirkwood, Edwards, and Banham still on the roster.

With what we saw from Nelson last night, I'd be willing to give Rachel Banham a shot at QB.

Jeff Jones > Cobb, Williams, Kirkwood, Edwards, and Banham

Why red-shirt a difference maker just because we have other talent there. You can't play for 5-years down the road.

I think that is a pretty bold statement since the guy hasn't even set foot on a college campus yet. Even some 5 star recruits struggle their first year or two.

Certainly if the coaches feel he is in the top 3 of the depth chart he should play. But if he is a fringe player (some games he'll play, some he won't), then he should redshirt in my opinion.

Either way, I do think Cobbs carries will go down a little bit next year just because of the addition of Edwards and maybe Jones.

I agree with you except to say that Jones should RS unless he's one of the top 2 running backs on the team. With our offense, the #3 guy hardly sees any time. It'd be a waste of a year for two carries for JJ.

Jeff will come here, he doesn't really have a choice, except for Iowa State but he won't go to ISU, and no way he redshirts, Jeff will start over Cobb

TCU isn't a very good football team, they won the Rose a few years ago but they aren't a very good team right now, i'm not really worried about them at all, it will actually be a huge plus, we will win relatively easily yet we will be able to say we went on the road and beat a big 12 team that went undefeated 3 years ago, and why is everybody marking NW as 50/50 game?

Huh? Jones has plenty of other offers. I really doubt he'd start over Cobb or Edwards. It takes 2 years for most players to learn an offense, and Cobb is almost surely the better back right now.

MSU, Mizzou and ISU are really his only legitimate options, and MSU and Mizzou aren't looking for another running back, they not only do not need him but they might possibly not even want him, and Jeff right now is better then Cobb, the only thing Cobb has over jones is his size, Jeff is faster, superior laterally, better hands and more of a threat in the passing game, better vision, and he is actually a good pass blocker, something that prevented Cobb from seeing the field his first 2 years

I hope Jones joins the team, but in my opinion a red shirt year for him would be good. Cobb, Williams (hopefully), and Kirkwood will get the majority of the carries in my opinion.

If our beloved Golden Gophers win more than 7 games next year, it will have been a very good season. I think 7-5 is the most likely outcome.

I think you'll prove to be correct on the 4-10 win range you've established.

Good analysis. I'm thinking six wins max.

i would be disappointed with less then 9 wins, that is including a bowl game

I see mentions here of strength on defense. I don't recall ever seeing more missed and dragged-forward tackles than I saw last night. Wide open lanes to the end zone twice by Syr QB. Not impressed with the defense last night. On offense, I saw two jittery QBs in maroon -- one more jittery than the other -- with one eye on the Syr defense and one on the Gopher bench. I saw a clumsy handoff, leaky offensive line, only one WR able to get open, and holding, late hitting, and illegal motion penalties. This was a poor performance. The team played like it was the first game of the year, not the thirteenth. It gave me no confidence that next year will be better. I don't expect more than six wins -- would not be surprised with five.

were we watching the same game??? and assuming you've been a fan since the fifties like your name mentions, I would assume you watched the Mason era defensive implosions and Brewster's solid defenses we fielded, correct? their QB played well, ours all played poorly. that was the main issue. nothing more, nothing less. just relax and don't over-react to one game. This is just like the post-Iowa and post-Michigan reactions all over again. take a breath
