Next Volleyball Coach

About 30 minutes ago, Reusse tweeted Gophers about to announce a new VB coach. If true, that would rule out Fischer from Pitt and Petrie from San Diego.
It's Keegan Cook. Currently the coach at Washington. His bio from the Washington volleyball site:

Interesting. I don't think he has had as much success as Ulmer? But if he didn't apply, then that is that.

This should be a new thread

Because?

If you say money, then why weren't they/Nike paying him so much less than what McCutcheon made last year?
Were or weren't?

I assume he was contacted based on time of hire, but maybe they were just waiting for the final four to be set to announce.

Sorry, were.

I don't get your last sentence. Unless you're saying that Ulmer was #1 and they were waiting for Oregon to lose so that he could sit down and make a final decision?

Folks this is a good hire. Washington had a ton of injuries this year so need to look back over the course of his coaching there not just this past year. He has had more success than Ulmer in the PAC. Plus he's only 37 so hopefully will be the Gopher coach for many years to come!

Great hire. We got someone from a very strong volleyball conference. He has much coaching experience especially considering his age. He has major college experience and international experience. He has had good success and hopefully can expand on it at Minnesota. I think most of our players will be happy with the hire and will stay because going to another school is as new and uncertain as staying with a new coach. I think the players likely to enter the transfer portal are those that feel that they will not get more playing time given the veterans ahead of them and the new recruits. I would hope that most players have bonded and enjoy playing with their teammates. However, there is a chance that Texas could raid the Gophers with NIL monies.

Now that we have a head coach the next few months are gonna be crucial. Maybe given his tenure in the Pac12, should we expect to see more recruits coming in from the west coast?

Fun to read the comments in the Seattle Times. They do not understand why Cook is leaving. Blame it on money. Good to see they are not pleased

A big reason that Cook may be leaving is that the Pac-12 may be coming apart with UCLA and USC joining the Big Ten. Washington needs to make a decision on where they are going. If Stanford leaves the Pac-12, the conference will be very weak.

Another reason that Cook is leaving is that he can join the Conference that has been the strongest in women's volleyball the past several years.

I have no idea if Minnesota gave him a offer and contract that he couldn't pass up.

He has five seniors on his Washington team and will inherit a younger, veteran team at Minnesota. Three of his seniors are AVCA All-Americans. I don't know if they will be coming back with a Covid year.

Lastly, Coyle probably told him that there is sunshine in Minnesota but conveniently didn't mention -30 F and about 6 months of snow.

I don’t intend this to undercut your analysis in general, but the Big Ten sure did suck in the NCAA volleyball tournament this year.

I wouldn’t say they sucked. Had 5 in the sweet 16 and two in the elite 8. Granted none in the FF for the first time in a few years. The pool gets deeper every year and that makes it harder to advance.

If he actually coaches and recruits for strong defense, then yes.

Just watched the VB Press Conference on YouTube. Believe KCook mentioned that none of his volleyball players entered the portal whiile he was HC, but the Washington program did add a few from the portal.

Sure hope that holds true while he is HC at Minnesota. We have had our share of too many great VB players enter that portal.....Wenaasota being the latest. Huge loss especially because she played the RS that nobody else could play as well as Jenna and Zone 1 defense that Kilkelly couldn't cover.
