Next Gopher Basketball Coach Thread

I know that people around here like Flip but why would you turn the program over to someone who hasn't recruited since 1985? Those of us who are 40 and older might be jazzed by the hire but the name doesn't mean much to a 17 year old in Chicago or Philadelphia.

I am on the fence about Flip, but I would guess he has more name recognition to 17 year olds than most college basketball coaches. He took Detroit to 4 Eastern Conference Finals, that is a lot of exposure.

Frebby Hoiberg seems to be doing a fine job getting top-flight talent to come to Ames, Iowa. I think Flip Saunders would have little problem getting the same type of talent to come to Minneapolis.

Not sure how to take that but it does not seem good.

In no particular order:

Anthony Grant (probably won't come)
Mark Fox (ditto)
Scott Drew
Mark Turgeron (see above)

Flip
Tim Miles

Brian Gregory
Shaka Smart
Chris Mooney

Wild card that Maturi would be too scared to pursue: Bruce Weber.

Why would we want Bruce Weber?Tim Miles would be a horrible hire.Just because he had a few upsets at a low D1 school. That doesn't mean he can recruit or handle a Big Ten job.Just because he was on Paul Allen's show a lot should disqualify him LOL Flip[would be decent. He does have name recognition and the NBA connection impresses kids.

Bruce Weber has gotten talent to Illinois and not put it together. I'm not saying my first choice, but he's a good coach that seems to always have the car stuck in neutral. A fresh start and maybe he puts it all together. He'd probably like a chance to get out before he's asked to leave. But Maturi would never pursue another Big 10 coach, so it's irrelevant unless he gets canned.

I disagree about Miles. If we're going mid-major he's at the top of the list. Whether they can make the jump to the Big 10 is a question for any mid-major coach unless you're talking Lon Krueger or Alford, etc.

What is the best route? One of a number of successful mid major head guys or a young assistant from a big time program?Mid major guys really seem to be a boom or bust.Todd Lickliter was a huge bust for Iowa and a possible Gopher target if Tubby didn't fallen in our lap.
I just hope Tubby stays because in thinking about it .He is the best we can hope for.

I agree. Tubby staying is the best scenario. Flip is probably next, but there's a huge boom or bust factor there as well.

Would you add Brian Dutcher to this list?

Would you add Brian Dutcher to this list?

Maturi is so risk-averse, I don't think he will consider anyone who had an over-due library book 25 years ago. ;) Dutcher's ties to Fischer will mean he has no chance, IMO. Not to mention whether the way it ended with Jim D. is an issue. I also wonder, if he's such a good candidate, why he hasn't gotten a head job a long time ago?

I would add Chris Mack to the list though. If nothing else, it would be such fun to watch Souhan at the first press conference.

flip's not such a sexy choice...

he's got no reputation in college basketball and hasn't been around the game in twenty years. will him telling a recruit he knows what it takes to play in the nba work? i think they need to tear down the barn and build a nice facility for games, and a practice court. college kids aren't impressed with arenas built on 1908 or whatever. they want a nice locker room and access to xbox, sorry to say.
