Alec Kocour, a 6-foot, 183-pound wide receiver-safety from Waukesha (WI) Catholic Memorial, shined Sunday at the Minnesota Gopher football camp. Kocour helped lead his team to a Division 3 state title as a junior.
Kocour talked to Gopher Hole.com about the latest on his recruitment.
Gopher Hole: What camps have you had a chance to attend so far this summer?
Alec Kocour: I went to Iowa State so far and Northern Illinois. I plan on camping at Michigan State again and Madison.
Gopher Hole: You also attended the Under Armour camp as well, right?
Alec Kocour: Yes
Gopher Hole: Do you feel that you gain a lot by going to these camps that you can incorporate to improve yourself as a player?
Alec Kocour: Yes. Every camp, I have noticed that I gained something that improved my game.
Gopher Hole: What position are most schools looking at you playing in college? You play both sides of the field in high school.
Alec Kocour: Mainly safety.
Gopher Hole: Do you think that playing wide receiver helps you in a way because you as a safety know what the other team is trying to do?
Alec Kocour: It helps me on both sides of the ball, so you kind of know what to expect.
Gopher Hole: What do you see as your strengths as a player?
Alec Kocour: Probably one of my strengths is reading plays. I am a pretty smart player out there, so that is probably my biggest strength.
Gopher Hole: What things are you working on to improve yourself as a player?
Alec Kocour: Probably coming out of breaks is one of my biggest things that I need to work on.
Gopher Hole: I think you have two offers right now?
Alec Kocour: Yes. I have Illinois State and South Dakota State.
Gopher Hole: What other schools are you hearing from the most besides those two schools?
Alec Kocour: Northern Illinois said that they are possibly pretty much close to offering and North Dakota and North Dakota State.
Gopher Hole: What are you hearing from the Gophers?
Alec Kocour: They said that they are really interested in me. They like my highlight film and I just had to come here and show them what I could do and they are going to contact me and see.
Gopher Hole: Had you been here before?
Alec Kocour: I have been here twice. Once for the Junior Day and once for the Spring Game.
Gopher Hole: You lost a couple of good players from your high school team, including one who signed with Wisconsin. What are the expectations for the upcoming season?
Alec Kocour: We are definitely hoping to come back and win state. We lost a bunch of skill players, but we’ll have almost the same offensive and defensive lines, so we’ll try to run behind them and see what we can do.
Gopher Hole: Have you even thought about when you are going to try to make a decision on a school? Are you going to try to do it before the season starts or would you more likely take some visits during the school year?
Alec Kocour: I’ll most likely take some visits, but if I get an offer that I really like, I am going to take right then.
Gopher Hole: Do you come from an athletic family?
Alec Kocour: I have two brothers. One runs track at Marquette and another is going to Marquette next year. He was going to play football at Mt. Union. I have a younger brother and a younger sister, too.
Gopher Hole: Do you play any other sports?
Alec Kocour: I used to play basketball, but now I work out at Next Level and just train to get somewhere in football.
