The bolded is what I remember from newly-hired Mason defensive coordinators.

I have heard the “we’re going to rely on versatility” or the “we’re going to do things differently” when it comes to defenses that lack an identity or a core of solid players.

Thankfully I believe this defense has both of those things. Some scrutiny is still appropriate as a first year DC but I think the players and culture will make a serviceable DC at the least. Can’t wait to see what he produces!

I would say Robb Smith's defense was well-mannered. Very inviting and accommodating to opposing offenses

Hetherman made a hair on fire type comment last year before the season started and I had the same sentiment. The defense ended up being really good from an opportunistic senseso I hope this season is a repeat
