Per GI, the Gophers got a late 2010 commitment from WR Cameron Wilson. 2 stars from Rivals, no offers, he was set to walk on at Oklahoma.

Welcome aboard. I guess.

I don't get it. He was going to walk on at Oklahoma but he had zero offers?

You'd think if he's good enough to walk on a Oklahoma, somebody would have offered him. Even if it's Toledo... or Tulsa... somebody would give this kid a shot.

That being said, I'm not overly impressed with his tape. Hopefully he will develop into something we can use.

Oklahoma's a damn good program...idk why not...Decker was a 2 star.

Can we please stop with the "decker was a 2 star" comparisons? Not every 2 star player will turn out like that. I am a brew backer but he was not hired to bring in two star rejects.

While there are plenty of stories of lighly recruited or unrecruited athletes becoming major success stories, Brewster was brought here in large part due to his recruiting process. How many of these VERY lightly regarded guys did we have to finish up this class? The DE from Texas, the WR (Hutton) from Texas and now Cameron Wilson. I believe between the 3 of them they had a grand total of zero BCS offers and possibly only 1 D1 offer total.

Just because someone decides to try and walk on to any program in America...that doesn't mean he won't be cut from the squad during or after tryouts.

Whether it's the 18-year-old co-ed from down the street who wants to be a synchronized swimmer or volley ball player at the D1 school in a neighboring state...or 'Rudy,' who is 5-feet nothing tall, and weighs 100-and nothing pounds, with no athletic ability, attempts repeatedly to gain admission into Notre Dame so that he can try to 'walk on'...these folks are cut from the squad far more often than they make the squad.

Don't read too much into the fact that some recent high school grad is indicating he will be 'walking on'...;)

But these three late signees have a combined 5 stars...:D

STOP before you even start. Whenever one of the many poorly-rated, anonymous recruits signs with Minnesota, someone always has to bring up Decker, who is the EXCEPTION, not the RULE. It is a rarity for someone as poorly rated as Decker coming out of high school to succeed like he did. We can't keep relying on a wing and a prayer with these prospects. Don't confuse hope with a plan.

Kid's GPA is through the roof. I'm ok with this.

It's optimism. Some people have it. Don't be a dick. The "Stars as an indicator of general success on the field" argument has been beaten into the earth's core on both ends. No one wins. Every player is a crapshoot.

This kid could be converted to a db, too. We need those, remember?

I honestly thought this was a joke when I first read it. But apparently you are dead serious. When someone says "he's a great student" is like saying the ugly chick "has a great personality."
Yeah, and I agree, the whole star-rating system utilized by Scout and Rivals should be completely thrown out because those two national databases know absolutely nothing....C'mon!
I bet you would love the star-ranking system if the Gophers actually inked highly-rated players.

Wow! And you played where as a 5 star stud?

This is a 2010 not 2011 commit isn't it? Not "hope or plan", more like trying to fill a late year hole.

They have a couple unexpectedly open scholarships.( The CC didn't know about the classes, how could the U?) If you or anybody else knows of any 5, 4 or even 3 star guys out there forward the names. Take out those that could actually get into school and that list is probably empty.

You complained that any critics of the program are treated badly. There are plenty of good reasons to criticize Brewster. I don't know a whole bunch about the murky world of recruiting, but I do know that if you're Brewster and this is an important season to you, letting scholarships go unfilled this year could be a bad idea.

Let it go. Let the trolls whine or, like Studwell make the complaint on this very short.

Simple math,

Cameron Wilson = 2 Stars
Eric Decker = 2 Stars
Cameron Wilson = Eric Decker

Sweet!

...welcome to the University of Minnesota, Cameron.

Here's to hoping the kid give it his all, keeps his grades up, contributes to the team, and does the University proud.

Here is my thought. We have open scholarships to use this year. Isnt it better to use them then loose them? I dont think we can just go ahead and use them for next years class. Might as well fill it with a body instead of just waste it.

Welcome aboard!!!!

Can we stop with the "Brew wasn't hired to bring in 2 stars" talk too? McKnight is our best WR, and he was a 2*. The kid is smart, has good size, and decent speed. Give him a couple years to develop and he could be a good WR. Most kids don't contribute significantly in their first couple years anyway. We aren't in a position to cherry pick our recruits here.

LOL @ some of the overreactions on here. Don't bother give the kid a chance to prove himself, we'll just assume he sucks now. If the coaches thought it was worth a shot, considering there was an extra spot, then at the very least we could give the kid a chance to show he belongs. If he doesn't do much, well, there's plenty of those in EVERY program. You're not gonna get an all-conference player with every recruit.

All those arguing Brewster wasn't brought here for 2-stars, you're right. He was brought here to improve recruiting. Has he not done that at all in your opinion? Do you truly believe he hasn't upped recruiting in Minnesota to levels it hasn't been in a long time? I think he has. Has he whiffed on some good ones? Of course, but when you're building a program, you're not gonna get everything you want. For some reason, we act like he should get any 4 or 5 star he wants. I think he's done quite decent considering what he's working with. He's battling with the big dogs and getting into the top 3 or 5 of recruits I would have never thought possible. Yeah, you can't keep losing those battles, but only three years into his tenure, I don't think he's established enough to command attention over the USCs, Floridas, and OSUs of the world...not yet at least.

As far as Wilson goes, welcome to the U, hope he shines out like McKnight in a couple years.

This kid's got great intangibles. You can't teach that.

Big framed kid with good speed. Welcome aboard!
Folks need to realize the recruiting mantra of this regime is not cut and dry, not based on stars, not based on diamonds in the rough, or developing underrated players, not based on bringing in top talent from all over the country, not based on concentrating on in state kids, it's all of the above! I'm sure they actually do quite a bit of evaluation for each offer extended.
It's obvious they are digging around looking for help to fill the spots they recently had to vacate.
This kid has some nice skills that could make him a TE prospect or a nice sized WR, maybe even safety. Let's welcome him aboard and quit acting like he's a worthless prospect because he's not on the espn top 10 800 star rivals most likely to catch a deep bomb 100 4 leaf clover list.

+1 great points. Better to use a scholly on a hard working kid with upside, than lose it. No one can deny the effort Brew puts into recruiting, or the increased success he has had here at the U.

This thread is a useful rorschach test. Brew signed a kid up because he had an extra scholarship and saw potential upside.
The Gopher antagonists/Hawkeye and Badger fans of this board have exhibited reactions that are typical of them.

The young man has great measureables and appears to be a hard worker; his type tends to bust their asses to prove their worth. He is an excellent risk if you would call it that. Moreover, he is a 5.4 2*; not a weak player at all. Coach Watson will coach him up for sure if possible. Frankly, the stars don't mean much when a staff like this one evaluates the kid and concludes that he can be a player. The Minnesota Staff have a very good eye for talent. In fact, had we offered this kid early on, loads of schools would have undoubtedly jumped on him and potentially pulled him away. Look at how many offered Farrow is compiling. It is well known in the recruiting realm that The U Staff ID's very good players that translate well to the college game. This kid may be another McNigtht.

forget about the stars for a minute and lets examine his offer list................? he didn't have one single offer. it says on his rivals profile that he is a soft verbal. also on the McKnight comparisons....Joe just started playing football as a senior, i believe, as he was a basketball player. curious to find out why this kid wasn't recruited harder since he is from texas and all

Let's see your Brewster you have an extra scholarship because of a couple of signees come up ineligible. There's a kid with good size, speed, and is an athlete, but only one year of high school football, a project. Why not take a flier on the kid? The other option is a wasted scholarship. Another factor is he's from Texas how much good will will this generate with the HS Coaches? Kudos to Brewster, it's not the best situation, but he's making the most of it.

Murray used to say when recruiting, if 2 kids are tough, good work ethic, and equal ability, find out how often he shaves. If it is every day he is pretty much done growing, can put a little wt. on, but developed. If he shaves once a week he gets the nod, he has a better chance to develope in to a better football player in 3-4 yrs than the developed one! Food for thought.
