Nebraska

Well, there was this blank piece of land between the Dakotas and Kansas, and they had to call it something

Kill won a couple in a row against Nebraska, but I don't think Claeys beat them. Fleck's first year (2017) we beat them 54-21 and Nebraska turned the tables in 2018 beating us 53-28. They racked up 383 yards on the ground and I remember the game pretty much spelled the end for Robb Smith, I don't know if it was the defensive scheme or players just not executing, but Ozigbo ran a couple of off-tackle plays that went for scores and both runs were 40 or more yards. I can remember muttering to myself, "Does anyone know the concept of 'contain'?" Durr was basically on an island on those plays and if he stepped inside, Ozigbo went outside and if Durr tried to contain, Ozigbo would cut inside (where surprisingly, there were no Gophers). I think Smith was demoted the next or week after.

Nebraska ran up the score throwing long balls into the 4th quarter. I remember the game, a reporter asked why Nebraska was doing that and Ozigbo responded with the standards (and I paraphrase) "They disrespected us last year."
Smith didn’t let go til midway through the following season though. Wasn’t it after getting blown out by Illinois in 2018?

GH has a weird obsession with Nebraska IMO. Wouldn't shock me if they have a pretty good year.
I think you have a really low bar for what constitutes an obsession. GH points at Nebraska and laughs because every year we're told how they have turned the corner.

You can find fanbases throughout the country mocking Nebraska for this. It's not a GH thing and it's pretty far from an obsession (IMO).

Smith was let go in the middle of the 2018 season either right after the Nebraska debacle or a week or so later. It may have been the second blowout that did him in. I probably should have written it more clearly. Fleck pounded Nebraska in 2017 and got pounded by Nebraska in 2018.

Then came the 2018 resurgence with the very unexpected victory over Purdue at TCF. That was a fun day and hope again sprang eternal. Made it to Detroit in the end which was well deserved from how low we were.

The start of Progress.

Then Fleck pounded Nebraska in 2019. I was at that game. It was raining and near freezing temperatures. Nebraska couldn't stop the 3 headed monster that was Rodney Smith, Shannon Brooks, and Mo Ibrahim. They literally ran Nebraska over.

Really, really wanted the shutout but Fleck decided not to go for the jugular.

Smith was fired after the Illinois game in 2018.
Fleck gave Smith the dreaded "vote of confidence" after the Nebraska game 2 weeks earlier.
