Definitely a surprise not sure Nebraska fans will be real happy with the hire.

That one came out of left field, don't remember seeing his name as a candidate anywhere. Fans over at HuskerOnline are in full on meltdown mode about this, pretty funny stuff.

So how many people said "NO" before they got down to Riley?

The guy finished 5-7 at Oregon State this year. Seems like a reach to me.

Never saw this one coming. Riley is a Corvallis native who bolted for the NFL in the late-90s after getting Oregon State out of a three-decade hole, then was given a second chance to return home when his replacement, Dennis Erickson, made the same NFL mistake a few years later. I really thought Riley would remain the Beavers' coach for the rest of his career.

The Big Ten added a really good coach and a genuinely good person. I just don't see this hire going over well with Husker fans.

This cannot be what the boosters had in mind when they wrote the Bo Pellini buyout checks.

That's being kind. In 14 years as a college head coach, he has finished with a losing record six times, and finished with nine or more wins four times. His last five seasons at the helm of the Beavers:

5-7
3-9
9-4
7-6
5-7
---
29-33 (.468)

Nebraska must really think he is in such a bad situation in Corvallis that getting close to .500 is miracle work. Maybe they're right ... but to me it's a total head scratcher.

What's funny is a lot of the OSU West fans wanted Riley out. So this worked out well for them.

Totally agree with the bold Gopher07. My girlfriends relatives are HUGE Husker fans. Will be interesting to get there reaction at her family christmas in Sioux Falls in a few weeks. Can't imagine it will be good.

I guess we can put the "Kill to Nebraska" rumors to rest now. I watch quite a bit of Pac 12 fb and OSU is a fun team to watch...very up tempo. However, they seem to make a lot of mistakes that have lead to losses. I put much of that on coaching. I thought Riley's days were numbered at OSU due to their decline. Neb might have just bailed Riley out by hiring him. My guess is that if OSU had another season next year that mimicked this year, he would have been fired. Very strange hire.

I think he's a pretty good coach.

No prediction for his tenure in Lincoln.

I'd say this is good news for Gopher fans at least in the short term as this is not a "splash" hire that many thought Nebraska would/could make. I don't know much about Riley but sounds like he's pretty well respected. His results at OSU aren't great but I can't imagine it's easy to win games there. We'll just have to wait and see how this works out.

I wasn't worried.... But, now that I see they were willing to hire Riley I realize I should have been. HA! Nice work Nebby.

Go Gophers!!

Looking at his record and bowl appearances at OSU this looks very similar to Glen Mason's resume at Minnesota.

I don't know anything about this coach...but then again I didn't know much about Coach Kill before he came to Minnesota. I recall, however, the meltdown that happened here when Maturi hired Coach Kill. Most people thought it was the end of the world because we hadn't hired a big name coach. Time will tell if Riley follows the path of Coach Kill or if he follows the path of Tim Brewster.

Didn't realize that Mike Riley was already 61 years old. Wow.....makes this hire even more surprising. Taking that into consideration, it seems like a place holder and not a long term hiring, imo. I always kind of wondered why Riley always seemed to look so tired on TV, well now I know. ;)

Holdover for Frost.
