By wooing and satisfying Smith's demands, the Gophers got a coach who Sunday achieved the undeniable sign of progress for a team that hadn't won back some fans after an academic scandal in the late 1990s when he arrived. Smith, however, thought the Gophers would make it sooner.

"I thought we'd do it in one year," he said. "I was disappointed we didn't do it last year. 'Cause I thought last year's team, with the experience that they had, and we let some games slip away last year. We almost did that this year."

More perspecive on the thoughts of the coach last season on making the ncaa in 2008.

Congrats to the team. Now, win big.

Great quote from Tubby. It's nice to have a coach with actual expectations for himself and the program. It's also great that Tubby doesn't feel that it's so hard to recruit here like some on the Hole used to always claim but haven't uttered in about two years. Interesting timing.

Results. Being delivered.

Isn't it funny how all the obstacles that kept the BB and FB programs down seem to be evaporating. We've been told for years how tough it is to win here, how the big recruits didnt' want to be here. It turns out that's a bunch of BS. We wasted 20 years believing that was true.

You can recruit here. However, because of our past, you need a big name coach to do so. Every recruit we got in these past two years listed the # 1 reason they wanted to come here was Tubby Smith.

What's fun is that Tubby said he expected to make the ncaa's in year one. Again.

Some on the hole said over and over that he really didnt think that was possible, it was just Tubby "saying what others wanted to hear".

Dont see anyone uttering anything about his quote now.

Lol ! You really are ZTA.

Here's the quote. I know how much you like to see it !

"These guys are hungry. They want to have a great year next year. So, realistically yes, I think we should be going to the NCAA tournament next year," Tubby Smith, April 2007

Get used to being in NCAA. Tubby is 15 for the last 16 (years) on NCAA bids.

Perhaps you were one of the holers that said that Tubby was only "joshing" about that quote, eh Oh Pee?

BTW, that is creepy that you would save that quote..........

Lol .. that board is still searchable.

Let me save you the time though -

Here was one of your other favorites, you might want to use it on the other thread talking about the new practice facility !

We can compete with the Big Ten with current facilities, but will need a shiny new practice facility to complete nationally.

Which is it - is tubby to be believed or not? A few holers only want to believe selective quotes from our coach. :cool02:

BTW Oh Pee, why did you move from your normal 1/2 time locale a year or so ago?

Which is it - is tubby to be believed or not?

Tubby was correct. Realistically, we should have gone. Typical of Monson's recruiting and coaching there were players that just weren't able to get the job done. Thank GOD Tubby came along and rescued us from the ensuing mediocrity of the Monson era. Much to your chagrin obviously.

why did you move from your normal 1/2 time locale

I'm not sure what you're talking about.

Really, ZTA, I think you're a troll. You'll have to pardon me if I don't respond further.

Ok Opee1169. No need to respond further. I know who you are. You and your sidekick must think you are a little better than others.

Nice bailout by calling someone a troll. No other response?

Listening to what Tubby said regarding last years team, he went on to mention the senior leadership of Tollackson, Coleman and McKenzie and thinking with these 3 they had a shot to make the ncaa's last year. He's giving nice kudos to former players, which he has a fine and admirable habit of doing. He obviously hoped he'd be able to draw out their talents, and we hoped so as well but they continued to play as they had in the past.

No, what's fun is the fact that our team is playing in the NCAA tournament on Thursday. Nobody is uttering anything about his quote now because we don't care that he missed it last year.

It is pretty easy to be a naysayer of a sports team. Unless the Gophers go undefeated every year and get a number 1 recruiting class to go with each title, you'll always have something to rip on so good for you. But when you pull out an old quote and try to get vindication because you didn't agree with something Tubby said 18 months ago you look pretty pathetic.

The guy has high standards for himself and is still mad he missed it last year. He doesn't feel bad that you/other trolls are annoyed because he said they could get to the tourney in year 1 when they didn't, and more people should care about what you think. Tubby’s comments have nothing to do with message board idiots that dissect every single quote in hopes of stirring up a controversy that doesn't actually exist. He is a great coach that is always trying to get better and make his team better no matter how much they have already progressed. It is an outstanding situation for the fans. If you are actually a Gopher fan you should enjoy it, otherwise we’ll see you back here whenever the Gophers lose their next game.

Truth Teller - what is wrong with you? Are you not happy that we made the NCAA's in Tubby's 2nd year? What Tubby said was that, realistically, yes, we could of made it last year. I see nothing wrong, or untruthful about that quote. It was a possibility, we had a 20 win season, 2-3 more wins, and we would of made it.

Bottom line, I don't want ANY coach to coach for my team that doesn't expect to make the tourney. I don't want to hear that it's a "rebuilding year" from them, even though it may be. I want them to do the absolute most, with the least they have. I even said last year, a few people thought we were done at the end of the season - and I said, I guarantee you, Tubby will not give up on the Big dance until the clock strikes 0:00 in our last game of the BTT.I guess that's why Tubby's a future hall of famer, and you're just...well, a guy that brings negativity to GH in a time where we should all be celebrating.

And that question about is Tubby to believed or not? Are you serious? We are lucky to have one of the few coaches that isn't shady, that's really is honest, and always exhibits integrity and class.

Nothing wrong GL.

"And that question about is Tubby to believed or not? Are you serious? We are lucky to have one of the few coaches that isn't shady, that's really is honest, and always exhibits integrity and class."

It seems those that said Tubby was just playing "word games" last year wont admit to the fact that Tubby himself thought last years team was capable of the ncaa.

That is the point. But, the honesty here is not real great. That is all Lady. Perhaps your little clic could admit they were throwing $hit?

And I happen to agree with you about the integrity and class of Minnesotas coach.

Of course I am happy Minne is back in the ncaa. Should be a fun ride. I am hopeful it lasts a while.

TT, that was very insulting about the little clic throwing $hit. GL and the GH Staff do not deserve that kind of BS. While she may humorously refer to me as a creepy guy because I am happy we are Dancing, she does not deserve that. GL is Top Shelf.

Go Gophers!!!!

It's also great that Tubby doesn't feel that it's so hard to recruit here like some on the Hole used to always claim but haven't uttered in about two years.
Nicely stated. :)

As Blizzard's quote earlier in this thread indicates, Tubby's first quote was made in April and shortly (if not immediately) after he arrived. I don't recall that he said anything like that in the fall of 2007 or later in the season after he had more of an opportunity to evaluate the talent. That was the point that some of us made last year and that zTTa seems unable to grasp.

zTTa likes to claim that there's a "clic" (I suspect he means "clique"). Maybe the paranoia is contagious and that's how Dr Don caught it?

Moderator Snowman is at it again. Nice work hypocrite.

What Moderator Hypcriteman wont admit is some holers didnt agree with the quote, or more accurately wouldnt agree with the quote due to the expectations that followed. Tubby just confirmed what some understood from the start.

Again, Moderator SnowCrite cant be honest about it. Similar to dismissing a player who had nary played a full 40 minutes of college BB. And now is one of the best defenders in the Big 10.

Snowman = Lack of Honesty

Lol. While I'm a bit reluctant to post to ZTA/ Truthteller/or whoever he is, it's clear that he isn't interested in the success of the team but rather in watching the team fail and then pointing out the shortcomings of the coach and then feeling he was right all along and gleefully telling others what the truth really is. Thus=Truthteller. Why he sees himself in this role, if he's a Gopher fan at all, is beyond me. This is no different than any of the Kentucky trolls that have populated this board recently, just a different spin.

There's nothing wrong with being willing to look at the other side of a story but to constantly look on the dark side of things is pathetic, which he does. He's obviously not fooling anyone with a positive quote here and there.

Truthteller is a troll.

Why is he allowed to post here ?

Ban the troll !

As the friend & "sidekick" you're referring to, let me correct the spelling for you. It's Ope1169, not Oh Pee. And as far as I know he's barely posted -- if at all -- on this site going on two years. You can take my word for it or not, it's your choice. I'm guessing Blizzard is equally as confounded as I am whenever you refer to "Oh Pee" in reference to something Blizzard has posted.

TT, take time to enjoy the Gophers and Tubby's success. These are heady times to be a Gopher fan. And yes, I'm very happy that Tubby proved me wrong getting us to the NCAAs in just his second year. As I've posted here on multiple occasions, I thought it would be Year 3 or Year 4 before Tubby would get us to the NCAAs. Being wrong (or having the ability to admit you were wrong) can be a wonderful thing. You should try it sometime.

I think we're just getting started on a wonderful journey. Let's enjoy the ride. Life is too short to be bitter.

SnowMan, just to let you know that I accept your reference to my being paranoid...."Maybe the paranoia is contagious and that's how Dr Don caught it?" I take that as a compliment in that I go a little upset with TT's reference to "GL and the little clic". I was born paranoid, most people don't have an excuse!!

It takes a man to admit when one is wrong. Anyone who has been on the board for a while knows all they need to know about zTTa by his continued inability to admit when he's ever wrong. I was dead wrong as I thought Monson was a decent hire. He hurt the program more than I ever could have imagined. I have no problem admitting I was wrong. Monson was a disaster and it's nice to have the adults on the sidelines again.

Results. Being delivered.

You would be guessing correctly. I'm not sure how I would be linked to Opee but it's easy enough to see that TruthTeller is ZTA. Either way, unfortunately, ZTA has received the attention he obviously wanted. I don't intend to respond to any of his posts in the future.

Lot of fun to be winning a few, eh SS? Enjoyable to witness the joy of the players, going from the depths to making the ncaa. Especially happy for JAS, JW, DJ.

What is fun to read is the hypocrisy here. If the players succeed, it is tubby. If the players fail, it is due to Monson and the players being lousy. Wow. Cant have it both ways, yet so many try so hard. Point that out and it is a big deal. Big deal.

Who would have thought JAS could play so well around the hoop? Witness Michigan. I am sure it was tubby's doing, just for that game.

Bitter? About what? A bb coach leaving? Are u serious? Really? Pay $$ for seasons and parking for a long time - and not be a fan? Want the team to fail? :D Yup, right on!! :p

Simply pointing out double standards by the hole. Labeled as bitter, a troll, etc. Having a different perspective on things puts one out on their own. The rah rahs hammer away - it is easy.

BTW - no need to relocate SS. Unless, of course, the little folk dont quite measure up.

Win Stan. Win Big, Stan. Big 10 Titles.

And the only thing that matters on the court: NCAA Championship.

TT, you're a regular James Dean, a real Rebel. Keep fighting the good fight.
