NCAA Women’s Basketball Polls

#14 is solid.

Patricia Babcock McGraw is a dink. So is Michelle Smith.

Our own Kent Youngblood of the Star-Tribune placed the Gophers at #16, which isn’t totally unfair but less than the overall average of #14.

This makes Youngblood a dink

Gophers up to #14, Iowa slips to #16. Syracuse is #15.

From the StarTribune today: http://www.startribune.com/undefeated-u-women-reach-highest-basketball-ranking-since-2006/501810621/

Minnesota was 20th in last week's poll.
UConn is back in a familiar place — No. 1 in the poll after beating the previous No. 1, defending national champion Notre Dame, 79-61 on Sunday. The Huskies are the unanimous choice from the 31-member national media panel Monday.
The Gophers are No. 18 in the NCAA's RPI rankings, which measures a number of factors. Oddly, they are not ranked in the Top 25 voted on by the nation's college coaches."

Apparently the press puts more importance on Whalen being the coaches than her new group peers do?

This is wildly inaccurate. The Gophers are 18th in the coaches poll.

At the time that piece was produced, the newest coaches poll hadn’t been released yet. That was released just a couple of hours ago. The Gophers were unranked in the previous coaches poll. So nothing wildly inaccurate going on here, just a misunderstanding.

So it wasn't at all "odd" for them to be unranked in the previous coaches poll given that: A. it didn't incorporate the last week's games; and B. the Gophers were ranked 20th in the AP poll while being unranked in the coaches poll, not 18th as implied here. I suppose it was too much for a professional journalist to say "the newest coaches poll, reflecting this week's games, had not been released at the time this piece went to press."

Man, you never give a rest, do you?

Simple, straightforward, and accurate communication is not too much to expect from journalists. It's quite literally their job.

Agreed.

On the one hand, you could claim that if the Strib can't check their facts properly, then maybe (a) they should send a small check to all GopherHole posters for checking their facts for them; or else (b) they should hire a U journalism student as an intern to do their fact checking.

On the other hand, I do appreciate the effort that Kent Youngblood puts in to cover the Gophers. He's at least made the effort.

You keep asking this stupid ? Are you trying to be funny, not, or do you just enjoy being annoying ?

If you want to do a little scoreboard watching today of teams ahead of the Gophers in the poll.....

Starting with the soonest and least likely to be an upset,
JMU takes on #7 Maryland at 11:00 AM CT.
You can watch this game on the all-conference version of BTN+ here.

Free audio: https://portal.stretchinternet.com/jmu/portal.htm?eventId=479893&streamType=audio
Live stats: https://umterps.com/sidearmstats/wbball/summary

The game with #10 NCSU at Georgetown at noon is subscriber-only for both video and audio, but you can watch the live stats here. It’s slightly more upset-worthy than the Maryland game, but not much.

The next game should be the most upset-worthy.
It’s #13 California playing at St Mary’s at 4:00 PM CT
This game has a free video stream:

I’m surprised they didn’t show a graphic with Whalen in her #13 jersey.
Maybe they forgot she was #13?
