"7. Ralph Sampson II, F, Minnesota: "He has some upside for sure. He was so clumsy and uncoordinated in high school that I thought he'd be a guy who rides the bench at Minnesota, but he's actually good. He has NBA three-point range. He's more of a four now because he can step out. He's not bad. He can post you up, take you outside, take you inside. He might not be as talented as Jeff Green, but he's got some Jeff Green in him."

Where he'll go if he stays in the draft:40 to undrafted"

Go Gophers!!

Today?

So, is today the drop dead day on Ralph's decision?

The guy is a professional evaluator but sort of wonder at can "take you inside." Doesn't matter if Ralph doesn't want to.

Ralph Sampson II exhausted his draft eligibility decades ago.

Pro's draft on potential, because of his length he could develop into an effective NBA player. I question his quickness, he just seems a step slow.

seems a step slow? not at all for a 7 footer. I've always felt he's very mobile for a guy his size. But I do think he's sometimes slow to react to situations in the game. I'm not sure if it's because his feel for the game just isn't very good, or a lack of aggression, or if he's not always paying complete attention or what. But he's definitely got well above average mobility for a guy his size

And personally, I think if he's getting feedback telling him that he'll get drafted, he should jump all over it. I don't think he's necessarily ready, but I'm also unconvinced that he'll improve enough to become ready if he does come back for another year. May as well get while the getting's good, and this draft has an almost complete lack of guys 6'11" and up. Frankly, he's more likely to get drafted this year, and in doing so start a professional career. More power to him, and I hope that he does improve and become a legit starting NBA big man.

I just can't understand the fact that a professional evaluator just might have more expertise than anonymous commentors on GopherHole.

Re: Ralph Hitting 3's

"He has NBA three-point range."

Was it the 5 college 3's he made all year; or the 19% make percentage the impressed the scout more?

Say what you want about people on this board. But that scout is clueless.I should have his job.LOL The three point NBA range comment is mind boggling. But I guess the NBA drafted the O'Bryant kid from Blaine in the lottery so anything is possible. The truth is Ralph is just not that good. What area does he have above average skills, in even in college?Maybe as a shot blocker. What is he going to do well in the NBA?Maybe after a few years overseas he can come back and be a back up center in the best case senario.

I think this is a smart move by RS3. With people like UNC's Henson, Zeller, OSU's Sullinger, UK's Terrence Jones opting to stay in school, there's not a ton of size in this draft and He just needs one team to be intrigued enough to draft him. I think inconsistent best describes RS3 but I think we can all admit we've seen flashes of what he can do and he is multi skilled. Doesn't mean he'll get drafted but maybe he kicks butt during the workouts and impresses at least one person.

do you watch the nba? It's all pick and roll. Ralph sets pick for point guard 18 feet from basket.. his defender hedges out on the pg.. pg kicks back to ralph, he easily shoots over 6 foot pg and he does consistently make the 15 to 18 foot jumper. I think they're looking for a poor mans Tim Duncan

LOL! I didn't say I think he's highly draftable, but 6'11 and able to knock down 15 to 18 footers, with an ability to extend that range is something the NBA scouts will look at. He doesn't have any handles to speak of but neither did Tim Duncan coming into the league. Tim Duncan however was a pretty dominant post player in college and we all know Ralph is not. He does have a fade away, a nice hook shot, good range on his jump shot, he's a decent passer, pretty quick for a guy that long and has been consistently a good shot blocker.

Weaknesses: Inconsistent effort, doesn't play with passion, needs more strength to be a traditional PF, needs some ball handling skills if he is going to be a face up 4. But he is 6'11 with some skills to work with and a chance to develop more. You can't coach 6'11 though.

The draft next year will be loaded with Bigs so he does have a far better chance of getting drafted this year rather than next year so that's where his advice is coming from, IMO.

Jajuan Johnson from Purdue is a projected borderline 1st round pick and he is 10X the player RS3 ever hopes to be. It's absolutely absurd that this kid even thinks he can sniff the NBA.

How much do you want to bet? Not saying he'll get drafted (although there is a chance he'll go late in the second round), but I bet he spends some time on an NBA roster this season.

Sampson iii is in a no-lose situation. If he doesn't get picked, he comes back to college. If he someone fools someone into picking him...it would mean going pro this season would have been the best decision he ever made.

Not true. By staying in past May 8th, he officially gives up his eligibility.

NBA scout

This scout is clueless. He most be a Timberwolve scout:eek:. Jeff Green:clap::D

Someone else put on here he hits the 15-18 jumper consistantly??

I do agree he has nothing to lose by doing this. I wish the guy well but he is D-League

If that is accurate then my statement was ignorant and stupid.....

WHOOOPS :D

That's why there is a deadline, if not getting drafted meant you could just come back to college everyone would declare every year and if they didn't get drafted, just go back to school.

If he doesn't withdraw by 11:59 tonight, he is no longer a Gopher and never will be again.

Ralph

Most former gopher prospects when measured at NBA predraft camp are much shorter. Jacobsen listed at 6'6" measured at 6'4" and change without shoes. Quincy listed at 6'7" was 6'5" and change without shoes. Quincy did grow and looks all of 6'8 nowadays.

Odds are the 6'11" Sampson is 6'9" and change. Now he is no longer a center, and he is defintiely not a small forward.

So you have a passive 6'9" power forward with a decent jumper, no inside game, no lateral quickness. His only decent skill is his shotblocking. I totally agree if Rickert couldnt make the NBA, Sampson has little chance.

Is the NBA going barefoot now? Who cares what they measure without shoes?

I'm dumbfounded. People are talking as if getting drafted in the second round is some sort of objective. Drafted or not, the objective would be making an NBA roster, and there's no way Ralph would make any roster.

shoes

Some people like to be scientific about things before they throw millions of dollars at someone. The sameway people like to call Sampson a 7 footer. It just sounds nice to give yourself a few inches.

If they dont measure them without shoes they will just come out with the Gene Simmons topps and gain 4 inches.

A better indicator for future success might be ones reach. The 6'9" Durant has the reach of someone 7'4". This "length" helps in all facets of the game: defense, rebounding, getting shots off, deflections, etc.

I understand the benefits of measuring them without shoes as a cross-reference, verifying that they're not wearing padded soles or some other type of device. But that is its sole utility - as a cross-reference only. You don't refer to them by their barefoot height when they're on the court. Sampson is not 6'9" in shoes while he is on the court playing in a basketball game.
