National Impact Red-shirts (J.Jones)

It's the other way around. The NCAA does not assume he will have 4 years until deemed ineligible, the NCAA assumes he only has 3 years until deemed eligible.
It's semantics, If he maintains the required GPA and academic progress to maintain eligibility, he'll get to the 80% required to receive a fourth year. About the only way he he doesn't, is to have a period of academic ineligibility, which means he leaves the program anyway. Whether he's a sophomore or redshirt freshman for eligibility is a distinction without a difference.

The ncaa assumes he is eligible until he is declared ineligible. Could be next year, could be in 4 years. None of us know what will happen. Maybe we should discuss the player rather than how many years he may or may not have left. For the record my opinion is he will play 2. Has nothing to do with academics though.

Everyone outside of a few on this board (including coaches in the press) seem to deem Jones as a freshman for this upcoming season

JJ is currently listed as a Freshman on the team roster - just like Steven Richardson and just like Melvin Holland Jr. Come Fall he will either be listed as a rFR (like MHJr) or as a So (like SRich). Then we can hopefully end this debate, but I suspect the 3 vs 4 debate will continue.

Can we start a separate thread, devoted to analyzing eligibility bylaws within an inch of their lives? Then we can get back to talking about how Jeff Jones will perform on the field.

Boring!

It should be obvious that Jones and the OL have the potential to be stars. I love Cobb, but imagine if he could have hit the hole a split second quicker, got on the secondary a split second faster, and been able to out-run said secondary for 1-2 seconds longer. Also imagine the holes being bigger. I believe thats what is possible with our future OL and Jones. I also have strong reason to believe that he will be a good pass catcher and blocker, time will tell.

I have also learned to listen to what our coach says about players. He loves Rodney Smith and David Cobb said that once he sees the field you won't be able to take him out.

It's starting to take shape: Build not a good line/running game, but a great one. Get a crop of big Wr's who can get downfield and make plays off of play action. Get a QB who can make the reads, throws, and be a significant threat to run. The plan hasn't changed, it's just not as easy to accomplish as people would like. But if you have patience and look closely, it's happening.

If Nugget was good enough, he would have beaten out Cobb. I could see him as a goal line back, but not as a 3 down back. And on Jones, why can't he become an immediate impact for us? Justin Jackson did it for Northwestern last year, and he doesn't even have the body for it yet. Justin Jackson was so skinny. The wild card is Rodney Smith. I really hope Jeff Jones wins the job though, his talent is a once in a lifetime type talent.

If Nick Chubb was good enough, he would have beaten out Todd Gurley. If Melvin Gordon was good enough, he would have beaten out Monte Ball.

You do realize that Nugget has had plenty of chances to win the job, before Cobb took the job at the beginning of his junior season right?

What you're trying to argue is just silly. Monte Ball and Todd Gurley were accomplished stars. We didn't have anyone special until Cobb separated himself.

If Nugget had capitalized on his opportunity and won the starting job it would have been a matter of time before had Cobb beaten him out. Limegrover always said even before Cobb's junior season that he is the most talented RB with the ball in his hands on the roster. Once Cobb refined his skills when the ball was not in his hands (pass blocking), no one was going to start over him. Nugget starting and becoming the feature would not have hid Cobb's talent because the coaches already knew about it.

nugget. someone call the nickname police board overlords.

That was an organic nickname based on real activity and coming from his friends and teammates, not some hackneyed attempt at a lame forced nickname contrived by a message board poster.

I could care less how many years of eligibility Jones will have.

If he's anywhere close to as good as we think, he'll be declaring for the NFL draft 2 years from now...

I really prefer Nugget35.

I prefer using the initials and numbers for every player on the team instead of typing out their last name. It's the cool thing to do.

Yep. RW35. I do that all the time so that means I'm cool.
