Nate Wolters On National TV Tomorrow

Anyone that thinks Nate is just a chucker, is an idiot. Probably a top 5 PG in DI basketball. Mateen Cleaves absolutely fell in love with him as todays color man. 36Pts, 7 assists, and 6 rebounds. But, Oakland has the top 3 point shooter in college basketball. And he hit 9 three's today. But, man, Wolters is fun to watch. What a ball player! I wish he was here, but I do understand that we had some great recruits the year he started his college basketball career. So, you can't blame Tubby for not recruiting him over top flight recruits. He may be playing his way into a 1st round draft pick.

Has very little to do with that. It's because there are people who keep saying we really missed on him and how we should have offered a scholarship. He's a great player and would love to have him on the Gophers, but that doesn't mean he was overlooked necessarily. He's done a lot better than anyone has expected, except maybe him and his mom's best friend.
Bs. Most of the posts are complimentary of Wolters. Most understand that Tubby had to recruit White and Rodney that year. It is the same old crap about any player that doesn't play in the Big Ten is no good. It started with those on here saying Nolen was better than Nate. Escalated from there.

If he truly wanted to play here he could have walked on. And then when Justin Cobbs transferred to get closer to home, he may have been awarded a scholarship rather than having Tubby try to grab someone late, in that case we ended up with Mav.

May have? Lololololololol.

I'd take Nolen on this current team over Wolters.

No one thinks he's a "chucker" he has a very good shot. He is asked to do a lot of scoring at sdsu and that would not have been allowed had he come to Minnesota. If you disagree you are an idiot! I could name ten point guards I would rather have then wolters, that doesn't mean he isn't a stud...I would just prefer a guy that plays very good defense something wolters is not known for.

I'm generally okay with Nate Wolters discussion as long as this is understood. There were players that were agreed upon at that time to be significantly better than Wolters, and we took them. Just that whenever players who played high school ball in Minnesota and are having nice careers at mid-majors, Nate Wolters in particular, it always seems to be followed by discussion of "Why didn't we go after this guy?" or "I would rather have (solid mid-major player from Minnesota) than (current Gopher)," and the subsequent "Nate Wolters couldn't play in the Big Ten/at Minnesota," "Yes he could," "No he couldn't."

Mostly it just annoys me because it seems like these threads have a general feel of "Why didn't we go after this player that that no other high-major program in the country wanted?" We are incapable of simply appreciating that he is a good player, we have to compare him to past and current Gophers, and 20/20 hindsight tells us that Wolters would have been a better signing than Royce White. As GophersInIowa said, these threads devolve into pissing matches.

Wolters isn't asked to do a lot of scoring. In the past week, his teammates on the floor have struggled so Wolters took over. Some teams guard him heavily which opens up the game for the other players. Some teams cut him some slack and focus more on defending the other players, figuring he cannot continue to shoot high percentages. Well, lately he's been in a groove. SDSU went into a similar slump last year (one guy playing well, other four having some struggles) but put it back together in the final few games of the season. We're hoping that happens again.

As far as not playing defense...look at his numbers for steals in some games and talk about his defense with New Mexico (Jacks won); 'Bama (Jacks lost at the last second); Washington last season etc.

As a Jackrabbit fan who follows the Gophers, I join with those Gopher fans who prefer people would quit bringing Nate up on this message board; or, if he's brought up with a report on what he's done because there's general interest in a Minnesota native at another school, it'd be nice if it was left at that. No need to second guess Tubby. I think Wolters himself would recognize that he didn't put up great stats in high school sufficient to attract a lot of Major D1 attention.

Nate's a great guy...fiercely competitive without an oversized ego. No need to bash him or Tubby.

Edited: added later: Cayman said it well.

Yeah,it would be a shame to disrupt that great perimeter defense the Gophers have been putting up lately.

Defense? That is your most important skill for a point guard? First of all, Nate is a decent defender. Second, he is a floor general. Did you hear Mateen Cleaves gushing all over him Sat? He would make this team much much better. Play Dre at the two where he belongs and Austin at the three and you have something. Now we have a bunch of perimeter passing and no dribble drive and dish.
