per Sandell:

If the Gophers are to match or surpass the overall success of their previous two seasons, their defense will once again be a major reason. Minnesota has held back-to-back opponents, including one with a prolific offense (TCU) to fewer than 23 points. Minnesota forced Colorado State into 13 drives that went for 10 yards or fewer.

A pair of interceptions and fumble recoveries, highlighted by a clutch strip by defensive tackle Scott Ekpe in overtime, gave the Gophers six forced turnovers on the year.

Saturday's game did nothing to boost outside confidence in the offense, but in the end Kill's squad was resilient enough to avoid a demoralizing loss. Now that their schedule offers a bit of reprieve, there is more breathing room for the offense to resolve its repeated shortcomings.

How quickly Minnesota is able to do so, if at all, is likely to be the determining factor as to which direction the season heads from here.
