Nate Godwin UPDATED 12/24: Decommits from Gophers, commits to South Florida

Not a bad offer list if it's accurate. The West Virginia offer really stands out, as does (of course) the Western Michigan offer

Would be a nice pick up. Doesn't seem especially fast, but looks tough and appears to like contact. Pretty good ball skills.

Godwin is friends with Eric Carter, so that is probably helping our cause.

The time is now for Rucker and Brookins to get on board. I'd be surprised to see us with 5 DB's on signing day.

I still think Coach Kill is targetting the players the helmet schools would see as fall back options when the miss out on the original players they target. Using the stars for example, they target a few 4 star DBs, do not get them so when it becomes apparent they will not get their 4 stars they go for the three.

It appears rather then miss out on the 4 star and the 3 star, Coach Kill simply targets the 3 star first and lets them know they are the top choice verses the being second choice or settled for by other schools. He is kind of hitting the middle ground between Brewster and Mason. Along with that, Coach Kill is targeting players that fit his Off. & Def. schemes.

Brewster shot for the top players and occasionally got them "Gray and Carter" for ex. He recruited taking on the helmet schools. Brewster for a variety of reasons, the biggest being Asst. coach turnover could not hardly think about scheme to recruit players for.

Mason did not bother trying to compete and loaded the roster with 2 star players, a few of which did turn out "Decker and Eslinger" for example with a few 3 stars. Basically Mason recruited as if the U was one of the second tier schools. Mason could highlight scheme players, esp along the OL with Shaw and the blocking scheme which did not need the maulers and was in general a system that led to a very successful running game.

If there were coaches I felt Brewster should have held onto it was Shaw and the RB coach, though given Brewster was at first going with the spread offense, I could see Shaw and his blocking scheme would have had a difficult time.

Coach Kill seems somewhere in the middle which, at this time, is probably the wisest place to be. Three or four years from now I expect him to start going for the

You don't have to land top recruits to compete in today's big ten...now i'll say it. hitler cuz of the Godwin thing and all

His highlights from 2011 show him as running back, safety, wide receiver, and returning kick-offs. Be interesting to see where he ends up.

So would I, especially given he does not have that many scholarships to offer. Though he will need to be prepared for the following year when a few of his DBs will be graduating.

The only difference between Kill and Mason recruiting wise is that Mason put almost all of his attention on recruiting offense whereas Kill will be more balanced. Both guys target similar tier athletes and put more emphasis on finding system guys and coaching them up as opposed to finding top flight guys that might have some risk attached to them. Neither coach wants/wanted to do battle with helmet schools. Brewster saw it as a challange to go after those more highly sought after guys.

and Brew did get a couple...like him and his methods or not, got to give him and his gumption a little credit anyway. Mason seemed like he waited to see who was left over, at least later on.

He has tweeting he is going to announce his decision tonight...guess the wait is almost over...

N G 2⃣ ‏@Nate_Godwin2

I will be announcing my commitment tonight !! #halloween yes sir

A 4.49 40 is fast for a college DB. He is a solid prospect from what I can see.Hopefully this a trend.

From his twitter:

I have officially committed to the university of MINNESOTA !! #BIGTEN #GOPHERNATION #MAROON AND GOLD !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I sent him a tweet where I welcomed him to "the original U". Liked the sound of it...:)

He seems to do a lot of things well. I'm guessing he's a DB with Minnesota. Welcome aboard.

If he is good enough for Coach Kill and Staff, he is good enough for me.

Welcome to Minnesota, Nate Godwin. We have a lot of love up here, and would love to share it with ya.

GO GOPHERS!!!

Yet another nice get for Mr. Kill - this class looks good so far.

Glad to hear. My favorite commit so far, and we need defensive back depth.

I'll be interested to see what we do with our defensive backfield. We have far more listed safties next year than cornerbacks.

CB- Shabazz, Baltazar, Boddy, Murray, Myrick

S- Wells, Vereen, Thompson, Travis, Johnson, Levine, Montgomery, Watkins, Godwin

I wouldn't favor moving Vereen back to corner. I think he's much more suited to playing deep. Montgomery seems like a guy who could play corner, but outside of that I'm not sure.

The jucos probably move into the starting spots next year. 4 CBs in this class to compete for starting spots in 2014 would be ideal.

CONGRATS TO DPODOLL on the scoop!

Welcome to Gophers Nate Godwin!!

I don't really care what it says he ran. When you guys watch his video do you think he seems particularly fast? If he was fast for a college db I think his offer list would be better given his other skills.

Has Boddy played a snap this year? Is he being RS?

But I had the same question as you. I think someone will make the switch. I'd guess it would be Thompson, Montgomery or Johnson.

I know very few people would agree with me, but if it were me, I would consider Wells. I think he has played fantastic at moments at S, but I really have noticed his struggles making the one-on-one tackle on a lot of the longer runs. It's tough, because he looks so natural playing centerfield. However, I think Wells best position might be boundary corner (ala Stoud). He is tough enough to take on the run, he'll get to blitz a bit and he's a good cover man. It's tough to move a good player to a new position, but it evens out the classes as well.

BCB- Wells (JR) / Balthazar (SR)
FCB - Shabazz (SR) / Boddy (JR) / Murray (SO)
S - Vereen (SR) / Johnson (SO)
S - Thompson (JR) / Travis (SO)

I don't know, it's probably not a good idea to move a player who is already pretty effective at his current position. So any criticism of this take is probably warranted.

It's kind of hard to tell.

I'm not sure his exact size, but he has really good size for a HS Safety. HE is already close to 200 lbs (this is becoming a trend with the Kill DBs). I certainly don't think he looks slow, but he might not have the best overall speed. He looks really quick though, especially on some of those running plays.

Yeah I was almost wondering if he might grow into a LB.
