A dream was thousands of miles away. It was really a world away, but that didn’t deter Oto Osenieks (Ocean-icks) who grew up dreaming of playing college basketball in the United States. That dream is almost a reality and will be next season. But until then, the Gopher freshman will have a forced redshirt season due to partially qualifying according to the NCAA.

Osenieks is a 6-8 forward from Brehm Prep in Carbondale, Illinois and a native of Riga, Latvia. He brings an athleticism and outside shooting ability that will give Gopher coach Tubby Smith a great offensive weapon that will create many matchup problems for opposing teams.

GopherHole caught up with Oto to learn more about his academic situation and what he will work on during his redshirt season.

Nice interview... Holy crap, the picture of him looks just like Colt!

Not to get picky, but I do think it's relevant -

In D1, there is no such thing as a partial qualifier. You could use those words to describe the circumstance, but there is no such classification -- you are either a qualifier or a nonqualifier.

Nonqualifiers can be granted partial waivers, which may entitle them to receive athletic scholarship aid, practice with the team, etc.

In year one, nonqualifiers do not have a redshirt year. They lose a year of eligibility. A fourth year of eligibility can be granted if a certain benchmark is reached by the student-athlete. (and in certain extraordinary circumstances)

Q&A:
Is Oto a partial qualifier? No.
Is Oto redshirting this year? No.
Starting next season, will Oto have four years of eligibility remaining? No, he will have only three years of eligibility remaining. He may be granted a fourth year.. however, that could not occur until more than three and a half years from now.
In all likelihood will his situation turn out very much like the old partial qualifiers before that classification was eliminated? Yes.
Then why post all this crap? That is a fair question. I'm sorry.
What are you doing Saturday at 1:30pm CT? Watching Marquette vs. Wisconsin on ESPN2. The BEast is 4-1 vs. the Big Ten this year.
Who does Becky's coach look like? You tell me:

______

Not sure what you are getting at. Are you saying GL is a closet Badger fan like Myron? I don't think so. I'd agree we have plenty of them on GH though.

No, no... not at all. I wanted to change the subject of the post in the middle of my own post... and just happened to be thinking about the game on Saturday... not directed at anyone. (well.. and also in my thoughts were that the Big East is better than the Big Ten)

This is what I would've asked him:

Can you meet me halfway, right at the borderline
That's where I'm gonna wait, for you
I'll be lookin' out, night n'day
Took my heart to the limit, and this is where I'll stay
Oh oh oh oh oh
I can't go any further than this
Oh oh oh oh oh
I want you so bad it's my only wish
