Nadine Babu column: Last week - a moral victory, this week - a moral loss

This was a bad loss, tainted by Coach Kill's medical condition which pales all. Gray is a wr, without qb accuracy. Shortell is the qb that can throw, learn and move on. Gods speed Coach Kill.

Nadine brings up a great point. If Gray is going to the NFL, it will be as a receiver, not as a QB. It would be great if he came to the decision himself and went to the coaching staff and said I'll do whatever you want including moving back to WR. I have not completely thrown in the towel on Gray as a QB, maybe a full year learning the job will put him in a great position for his senior year. Here's one question I'd have for coach Limegrover: why are they making Gray a drop back pocket passer? Wouldn't he be a bigger threat rolling out, with the run option? Maybe in practice, he's show lesser ability to pass rolling out. Who knows, I'm just an armchair QB.

Sorry, just noticed there was a big thread on Gray. If nothing else, it gets Nadine's article a few more hits.

I don't think it's throwing in the towel on Gray, or not believing in him. I think he could play QB and be just fine - but that's not his future. I think it could be a win-win down the line too.

Well his future can be just that, the future. He can convert back IN the NFL IF they want him to. Right now, he appears to be the teams best overall option. Let him progress throughout the season and go heavy in the off season with mechanics, reads, etc to prep him for his senior season.

Shortell will have his time. Both now and later.

Also, as others have pointed out, there's the depth issue. Ya, Gray can go back and forth and just might. However, at this point he needs all the work he can get at QB. This is a freshman we're talking about and behind that line he might regress once the Big Ten season starts. Got to keep reminding myself to be patient and trust that Kill is laying a solid foundation instead of looking for the quick fix. Bringing Shortell along slowly makes sense in that context.
