MINNEAPOLIS -- It’s eerie, really.

He stalks the sideline like him. When he pauses and folds his arms to survey the action on the floor, he stands just like him.

He enters the postgame press conference following 40 minutes of scrappy play against a nationally ranked opponent and his hair is still slick and neat. His father’s hair also stays flawless throughout the night.

When Tubby was let go he stated that if he, Tubby, wasn't able to win more at Minnesota, it's unlikely that a young and relatively inexperienced coach would be able to win. This is a great example of how mysterious coaching and chemistry can be in sports. (Jerry Kill and staff may be another good example).

What Richard Pitino has somehow pieced together in his first season is nothing short of amazing. He's taken an above average nucleus in the Hollins duo, found a point guard in junior college who's playing like an All Big Ten playmaker, persuaded a 3 point shooter to follow him, re-built two big men who were going nowhere fast, and resurrected a lost Oto O, to create a team that is competing with substantial success with some of the best teams in the country. How is this even possible? At this point in the season, he should be considered a serious candidate for National Coach of the Year. People won't agree, but this could be a case study in coaching.

Badger Appreciation Not Reciprocated

From Myron Medcalf, ESPN - The Gophers and Badgers hate one another. Proof?

“I tell people how much I respect [Wisconsin’s] program and Coach Ryan and they look at me like they want to knock me out,” Pitino said.

When did he say that?

Tubby said that if he couldn't win here, that no young/inexperienced coach would be able to? If that's true, that's some really weak sh*t.

I think he means Myron.

That was how I understood it. I think the statement should read (without pronouns) "when Tubby was let go, Myron stated that if Tubby wasn't able to win...."

Tubby more or less said the same thing upon landing in Lubbock. It was something like, he (Pitino) doesn't know what he's getting into, or doesn't know how tough it is up there.

Not Myron, Tubby. He absolutely said this. I would not make it up. He said that Minnesota was kidding themselves if they think a young, inexperienced coach would be able to have more success than he had in Minnesota. I don't recall if he said this relative to the lack of practice facilities at Minnesota or in some other context. But, I'm positive he said something to this effect. I was surprised when I heard/read it and I said to myself that I'll never forget that he said this. And I didn't. What I can't recall is whether it was in writing or whether I heard Tubby say it. I'll try to look it up.

Coach Darin (Hancock)

Honestly Myron, you're a Minnesota native-do you think the Minnesota program can actually improve from what Tubby had them as? Be real with me.

First thing, I'm not a Minnesota native. I'm from Milwaukee, but I covered Tubby for four years. ... Can the Gophers get better? Maybe. The university doesn't invest in basketball. Things won't change until they do. Gophers need a new arena and a practice facility. Coach needs better resources for recruiting. I think this is a very overrated job.

quick google search found this.

Tim Brando show I believe. I can't remember the context of Tubby's comments though.

Setting aside what Tubby did or didn't say (and I'm sorry I can't back it up), I just think it's remarkable what Pitino has created thus far. It's like he took a bunch of random ingredients he happened to find in the kitchen and cooked up a gourmet meal without a recipe. Very impressive if you ask me.
