Myron blog: Tubby Smith names likely starters for Tuesday exhibition

And a follow up tweet from Myron:

"Source close to the team says freshman Elliott Eliason will probably redshirt this season."

Go Gophers!!

I am shocked that Nolen is starting, Tubby is something of a softy. I can think of some coaches that I had along the way where Nolen wouldn't see the court all season.

Mildly suprised that Devoe not in starting lineup but would be suprised if his minutes are not greater than other guards by end of year.. Its a good thing when good players are being pushed by others... lots of depth.

I don't think anyone is surprised by that. He wouldn't see any playing time anyways.

Al had a personal problem and kept it quiet. It wasn't like he stole a laptop or something.

Go Gophers

I wouldn't think there should be much to read into in the starters for this one. Frankly, I would be fine if the cheerleaders and stinking mascot suited up for the game as long as the season gets rolling tomorrow.:clap::clap:

The lineup becomes "longer" when you call Williams a Guard instead of a Forward? MYRON IS A GENIUS.

/Joseph for MVP

The listed starting five, plus Mbakwe and Joseph, makes for a very impressive 7-man core. I don't think the freshmen will contribute a whole heck of a lot.... maybe in spots, but those main seven will carry us to a top-4 Big Ten finish. Rebounding and defense will be impressive, and don't underestimate the jump in chemistry and attitude with the departure of one guy from last year.

I'm surprised as well that Joseph isn't starting. He's probably the one player the team that can create his own shot. I expect him to lead the team in scoring.

It's strange that potentially going into the season, the top scorer and rebounder will be coming off the bench. Of course who starts is less important than who plays the most and who finishes close games but it's still odd.

Regardless, it's nice to have a solid 7 in the rotation and I'm hoping Hollins, Walker, or Chip can step up and play some meaningful minutes as well. Going 9 deep with competent players sure would be nice.

Not surprised that Devoe is not starting...two senior guards, need to build RWs confidence and want to get the big guys playing together early to build chemistry...makes sense.

I do see Mbakwe starting by league play...but starting Joseph means your back up PG is on the floor with your starter...tough to do.

Count me as one surprised Devoe is not starting.
I told you guys that he wouldn't be starting...and you all ripped me!

Just look at the starting 5 in the Canadian exhibition games...the same 5 that are starting tomorrow night. Joseph wasn't in the lineup in Canada, so I figured Tubby had already made his mind up on the starters?

My only question --- Will the 2nd wave outscore the first --- IF Devoe is the backup PG

The second wave should be coming in about 5 minutes into the game

PG Devoe
SG Chip Armelin
SF Hollins (the 1st)
PF Mbakwe
C Mo Walker

That lineup included 6-3 Devoe Joseph and 6-4 Austin Hollins. So yes, it's "longer" lineup. Didn't mean to call Williams a guard. But that setup would add length.

Hey...it's an exhibition. Devoe will be starting when the games really matter in December. So will Trevor.

Sorry if this is covered in another thread, but I couldn't find it. Is the game tomorrow night going to be viewable anywhere? Thanks in advance...

You can catch the game at Williams Arena ;)

Your only other option would be to buy a viewing package from BigTenNetwork.com. I bought the monthly pass for $7.99/month and will watch the 2 exhibition games and the game against Wofford from the computer. After the first month, I'll cancel. This is actually a better deal than buying the 3 games at $3 a piece like last year (assuming you can watch those 3 games online).

+1 I can't believe we are hearing the hate Nolen line already. I do think that Devoe will be playing a lot point by the time the conference games begin. But, Nolen will be there for big minutes from start to finish.

I'm not sure what you mean by "contribute". These Freshman are going to get their minutes. Forinstance, Hollins will play, if only to give Rodney a rest.

Minutes are more important. This is a best guess how 200 minutes will be divided up on average over the season (not counting injuries):

Joseph - 28
Nolen - 28
Hoff - 27
Trevor - 24
Sampson - 23
Iverson - 22
Rodney - 21
Hollins - 11
Walker - 9
Chip - 5
Allen - 2 (expect him to play a decent amount in conference play if Nolen or Joseph gets into foul trouble)
Maverick, Halverson and Dawson play in blowouts and won't count towards average
Eliason - redshirt

Personally, I'd like to see Iverson and Sampson play together quite a bit. I like the high-low dynamic they bring and Sampson is pretty good at feeding Iverson from the top of the key. Also, I think Trevor and Walker could be good together in short bursts when we got to establish some physical play. Hoff is best with Nolen feeding him the ball while Joseph, Hollins, and Rodney could be the length and run-and-gun we need at times in the backcourt.

Just one man's opinion on how I'd like to see the minutes divided.

Halvorsen CANNOT Play

He's a transfer and must sit out a year.

Wow a lot of analysis over a starting line-up in an exhibition game here. I think I'll just trust that Tubby knows what he's doing and not get worked up. I think Devoe will lead the team in minutes this year whether he starts or not. Hopefully this is what matters most to him as well.

Yeah, might be a little tough to see Halvorsen get minutes. I see friend of Tubby covered it.

Austin Hollins will pass or at least match Rodney on the depth chart by the end of the year.

Myron: I know you watched the NCAA Tournament... Most athletic group means nothing, best combination on the floor is what you need to focus on! TAKE THE BLINDERS OFF. Also, you have a misconception about the athleticism of both Ralph and Devoe (good players yes, but they are average high-major D1 athletes).

I would not be surprised to see Austin break into the starting lineup.

Watching him run the floor - he reminds me of Jamaal Wilkes (Silk). He is a similar size (6-6). Understand he is a very good shooter too.

Think the Gophers got a steal.

Myron, how is Devoe Joseph possibly included in the most athletic group?

From Myron's piece:

This is probably their most athletic group:

G Al Nolen
G Devoe Joseph
F Rodney Williams
F Trevor Mbakwe
C Ralph Sampson III

If they wanted length and athleticism, they could use this group:

G Devoe Joseph
G Austin Hollins
G Rodney Williams
F Trevor Mbakwe
C Ralph Sampson III

Umm, those are the same guys - except Hollins in for Nolen. I guess Nolen is more "athletic" but Hollins has more "athleticism."

Great nugget, Myron.
