My prediction for our next head coach

This would be great. I haven't thought about him simply because he's someone who I perceive as out of our league. Hope to be proven wrong.

I don't see any of the three (Petersen, Patterson, or Harbaugh) coming here. But I think it a better possibility than a lot of people believe, while far-less of a possibility than those who are blasting the prospect of Sumlin, Niumatalolo or Caloun (which is the level of coach we are likely to be getting).

Of the three, I would think Petersen is the most likely to end-up at Minnesota. The timing for a move is perfect, and people who think he is going to have better options are off-base. Jobs that are significantly better than this one just don't open-up very often.

I would think Petersen and Patterson are least likely to leave their current gigs. They are in the hunt for a BCS game every year, and in the discussion for title game consideration. That will change next year when they move to the Mountain West (not an AQ conference) but they will most likely play each other every year. Add on top of that a good non conference schedule and they might have enough from a SOS schedule persepective to get into the NC game if they are unbeaten and the champion from the SEC, BigTen, Pac10, Big12 have one loss.

?

Roughly half of the current Top 25 in the BCS rankings hired their coach within the last 5 years.

Hell every other year the Notre Dame job opens up.

This thread is funny. Anyone expecting a hire anywhere near this level is setting themselves up to be mighty disappointed.

If a HC position was valued on the basis of the BCS rankings this might matter. But by that rationale, Ball State should have been in the market for one of the best coaches in the country in 2008. In fact, if BCS rankings are what matters the most, Hoke should never have left, and Boise would already be one of the premier jobs in the country.

I would be absolutely floored if a Harbaugh, Peterson or Patterson type took the Gopher job. These guys can wait it out for a big time job and money to open and not have to go through the agony of trying to build the Gophers from ground level. That is unless they really relish the challenge.

No one can wait it out. You have to make a move if you think it is a better situation. All it takes is for Patterson or Peterson to lose two games in a year and no one will want them.

OK, use whatever metric you want. How about ESPN's "Prestige Rankings" from 2009?

2. USC - 1st year coach
4. Notre Dame - 1st year coach
5. Nebraska - 3rd year coach
6. Alabama - 4th year coach
8. Michigan - 3rd year coach
9. Florida St. - 1st year coach
10. Miami - 4th year coach

I can keep going for quite some time, but the point has been made.

Use whatever measurement you desire - your "point" is false and utterly without merit.

On the flip side, that strategy hasn't worked so well for Rich Rodriguez.

I would be shocked myself. But what a lot of fans don't realize is that the Big Ten has always been seen as very attractive destination among coaches. And with all of the financial instability in college athletics, think this is more of a consideration than it has ever been.

What in your opinion makes MN such a great Job? It has a bandwagon fan base (nicest possible description), has recent tradition and history of being terrible to mediocre, with average at best support (with the future support unknown) from the president and school administration, booster support (for football) is probably below average, harder to get recruits into school (claimed).

I thought Peterson already made $2.5MM? Is that not right? Could we give him a raise?

I didn't say it was a "great" job. I acknowledged that any of the three would be a huge hire. Surprising. A "home run" hire. Above expectations. And I said, if it happened, that I thought Petersen was the most likely of the 3 (for several reasons).

It is a good job. And the reasons you suggest for why this isn't a good job pretty much show what a program like Nebraska currently has over Minnesota. But I think what is more relevant here is how programs like Virginia, Colorado, North Carolina, Washington, Oregon State, Kansas etc. compare to Minnesota.

Minnesota has a compelling advantage over several schools. It is financially stable and is in a league where everyone is financially stable. The level of competition is high. And there are significant opportunities to grow revenue through the football program. I'm not sure how much the business-aspects of the job are a consideration to coaches. But I know that very few fans give this even the slightest consideration.

No, he doesn't win. What he proved is that 7 high profile jobs opened up in a span of 4 years. That means that only the top 1 or 2 head coaching prospects in ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL get an opportunity to move into one of those positions. And it's not as if Peterson or Patterson or Harbaugh would be the only serious contenders for those jobs. Highly respected coordinators at other top programs could be in the mix. Someone like Tressel coming out of FCS could be in the mix. Former NFL coaches could be in the mix.

What dpodoll posted proves only that each year one or two top programs has an opening. It's not like those openings automatically go to the next Patterson, Peterson, Harbaugh, Golden, etc. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't.

I truly don't understand the negativity on this board from some of you about this job. It's a Big Ten school where people will understand if you don't win in your first two years, a job you could use to leapfrog to one of those top 10 prestige programs or stay and become a legend, all in one of the most livable cities in America where you won't be hounded by fans every time you go to a restaurant or the grocery store.

Just as when the basketball search was occurring, Gopher fans seem to have an inferiority complex about the attractiveness of our school, city, and program.

Just the opposite:
I never invest my ego in things I can't control. A lot of MNs are not into the simplicities of boosterism and have an awesome life with or without the local team having a successful season.

I'd be tickled to have Chris Peterson...but not if he insists The Bank's field is painted Maroon.

If it were painted maroon at least our turnover numbers would go down. I'd be next-to-impossible to find a fumbled football on that new field.

Enough with the Minnesota inferiority complex. This is a GOOD job. It may not be as good as any in the SEC, or as good as most in the Big Ten, or at a few other schools around the country, but it certainly falls within the top 30 in the country. Why you ask? Lots of reasons including that the Big Ten conference is the second best football conference in the country (some might argue the best) which comes with the opportunity to compete against the best and if successfull play on New Years Day every year (just ask Bucky), the facilities are first rate, salary potential is in the $2-3million range, it is the only D1 school in the State of Minnesota (less recruiting competition). The fan base is extremely loyal given how mediocre or poor the program has been for decades. The teams draws 45-50K consistently to watch teams that have only on rare occasions have finished in the upper division of the Big Ten. The potential is there, and I think Maturi statements about aiming high is spot on the way to go. He SHOULD wait until the Bowl games are over to make the selection, and take a shot at getting someone who wants to move to the Big Ten and compete with Nebraska, Wisconsin, Iowa, Ohio State, etc and be paid huge money. Whether you are talking about Harbaugh, Peterson, or Patterson, a move to Minnesota will get you a big pay raise and chance to compete against the big boys of the Big Ten and that may be enough to land one of these guys.

So you start by saying it isn't for sure in the top 23, but certainly in the top 30?
