In 1988 I was in my second year of working for a law firm in Minneapolis when I was tasked with the chore of moving the admission of one of my junior colleagues to the Federal Bar. I begrudgingly took on the task since my colleague was a graduate of the University of Nebraska School of Law.
We showed up for a ceremony before the still living distinguished judge-who I won’t name-who, like me, was a Minnesota alum.
When it was our turn, I said “Your Honor, I move the admission of my colleague (name) to the Federal Bar. He is a graduate of the Nebraska School of Law.”
At that point, the judge looked up and said “Nebraska? Didn’t they beat us in football recently?”
I replied, “Yes, Your Honor. 84-13.”
“I’ll take your motion under advisement”, he replied sternly.
My colleague was mortified. “What? What does that mean”, he whispered to me.
At that point, the Judge called me up to the bench and in a hushed tone said, “Your motion
is granted but let him sweat a little.”
I didn’t tell him until we were driving back to the office.
