We're awful on all sides of the ball. We can't line up right, we can't stop turning it over, we can't tackle and we can't stop holding. Penalties, missed kicks, turnovers. Total shit show. We knew Michigan would destroy us, but I didn't expect to see us destroy ourselves. Sad to see.

Don't forget all the targeting penalties we got in Claeys' only full season (2016), that was brutal
Duke McGhee used to destroy those WRs lol.

The center needs to clean up the false starts. I think he's had a few this year.

Wow. That sounds awful.

I hope the Gopher football program doesn't lose any of our severely disgruntled fans. What would happen if those folks suddenly declared they had finally had enough abuse, and simply walked away? That would be bad. Gopher Hole would be so quiet.

I was thinking yesterday how this team resembles the Frost era Nebraska teams. Decent talent and flashes of brilliance but scores of close losses from sloppy play.
That’s an eery comparison. Although, I think Fleck can clean up the mistakes, while Frost proved year after year he couldn’t.

We had 7 penalties for 51 yards, one of which is the phantom call. There were 3 presnap penalties by the interior OL going against two of the best DTs in the country in one of the nations loudest stadiums. Add in one holding, one illegal formation and the facemask. Really didn’t feel we were “undisciplined” at all. We out gained Michigan and gave up under 4 yards a carry. The pick was a great play defensively if he was even in bounds and the strip is a guy trying to make a play that arguably could’ve been blown dead. The tackling has been my biggest sticking point, with Iowa being awful. Showed how much we’ve missed Walley and green who are both very good fill tacklers

I don't think the team as a whole in undisciplined.

Honestly, if you remove all of the false starts from the center I think this feels on-par with previous seasons.

The Gopher OL is averaging 3 penalties per game so far this year (15) compared to about .5-1.5 per game in Fleck's past seasons. The OL had 5 penalties alone vs. Michigan. I wouldn't sugarcoat it. Those penalties have an impact. Clean those up and give the offense a better chance at a more balanced offense and maybe a few Ws.

I think Johnson has had a flinch in every game so far. Growing pain for his new position.

The Gophers have routinely been one of the nation's least penalized teams under Fleck, and also one of the better teams in turnover margin.

This season the Gophers are 29th fewest penalty yards, marking another season in the upper quartile of FBS. Past season national ranks in (fewest) penalty yards:

2023 - #2 nationally
2022 - #4
2021 - #38
2020 - #20
2019 - #11
2018 - #1

For 6 consecutive seasons the Gophers have been in the upper quartile in the nation in fewest turnovers. Some of that is play style.

2 awful miscues (fumble and punt block inside own 20) and a garbage call cost the Gophers the game Saturday, but it's not part of a trend.

I'm not thrilled with 2-3 either but going and looking for the problems in penalties and turnovers seems odd for this program.

What about our gruntled fans?

Same thought occurred to me. A little more disciple and an average FG kicker, we might be 4-1.
