According to the NCAA, we're 10th, with 6 total. Nebraska is behind Minnesota:

Why did they pick 1936 as the start date? We won it in 34' and 35', which if they included those years would give us 6 titles.

They're probably referencing the NCAA's list where the AP poll starts getting recognized in 1936.

Prior to the AP poll, there had been other rankings agencies for college football for many years, even decades. This is just from the AP Era from 1936 onward. Minnesota was a consensus national champion in both 1934 and 1935.

UCF has claimed 73 titles in that same span
