***MORGAN ST AT MINNESOTA IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

I'd rather see Caleb Williams out on the floor than Rigsby or Patterson. The kid has confidence and a great looking shot. He looks to know how to play the game and is decisive.
Agree that he has been solid in limited minutes while he recovers from Mono. Will be interesting to see if he can carve out a larger role as the season progresses.

Good game overall. Both Mitchell's played well. Highlight wasn't Fox making 3 free throws. Instead it was right before tip off. I decided to walk around the entire concourse. Something I never do. I got to one area where I was the only person around for almost a minute. Even the concession workers weren't at their post. Electric atmosphere.

I opted out of the game today- was too hungover and decided to watch at home.

Looking forward to the Purdue game anyways. Boys played well today (against admittedly horrible opposition)

It's got to be defense and rebounding. The guy can score, might not be physical enough for Johnson, would love to see what he can add as another scorer on the floor.

That's where Cochran is intriguing. Hopefully he fills that void when he comes back. Caleb is more of a specialist off the bench. A catch and shoot guy

Mike Mitchell made it clear today. He doesn’t go down with the sprained ankle early in the nonconf schedule and the team wins 3-4 more games.
It's possible that we could have run the table in non- conference, but the grim reality is that we set the table full of patsies and at best we would be 11-2, having gotten smoked by the only two legit teams we have played. This looks like a team that will struggle to win 4 in the Big Ten.
Patterson needs to stop shooting!
He is not good for the team out there- 22% 3 point shooting and 32% FG shooting overall. It is crazy that our two highest volume 3 chuckers, are him and Rigsby and both of them shoot 22%. It was interesting to hear yesterday that Patterson's dad is a good friend of Ben's......

Hahahahaha.

Good one.

Morgan State covers the - 22.5 spread. Nice of the Gophers to hold the ball to end the game. 😏

Not necessarily a "bad beat," but not that far from it. Gophers led by as many 27 and had a 24-pt lead when Morgan State make a bucket with :38 seconds to make it 22.

Gophers then hold it on purpose and take the shot clock violation so as to not "run up the score."

If you had Minnesota -22.5 or -23, you couldn't have been pleased.

Patterson at Charlotte the last two seasons:

22-23: 48% FG - 39% 3pt FG - eFG% .533 (pretty damn good)

23-24: 43.6% FG - 35% 3pt FG - eFG% .494 (down a little, but still respectable)

Patterson at MN this season:
24-25: 31.7% FG - 21.5% 3pt FG - eFG% .367

so, does someone just forget how to shoot? I wonder if the issue is more with the type of shots he is taking - both location and where/how the shots are coming in the flow of the offense?

to analyze that, I'd need shot-chart info for the two seasons at Charlotte in order to compare it with the shot-chart info for this season at MN. and that's more work than I care to put in on this question.

Patterson is an interesting case study. His college career 3pt percentages:

Missouri State (FR): 4-32=12.5%
Missouri State (SO): 6-39=15.4%
Charlotte (JR): 27-69=39.1%
Charlotte (SR): 41-117=35%
Minnesota (GR): 14-65=21.5%
TOTAL: 93-322=28.6%

I would say the evidence may suggest he isn't a great 3pt shooter.

OK, let's add this to the discussion:

Patterson - minutes played per game and # of 3pt attempts

20-21 MO St. - 14.5 mpg - 1.4 3pt att/gm
21-22 MO St - 26.3 mpg - 1.1 3pt att/gm
22-23 Charlotte - 28.3 mpg - 1.9 3pt att/gm
23-24 Charlotte - 32 mpg - 3.8 3pt att/gm
24-25 Minnesota - 32.1 mpg - 5.0 3 pt att/gm

so it may be tied to number of attempts - but I wonder if it also ties to the quality of attempts. he had his best shooting season while attempting about 2 3pt shots a game. as the number of minutes played and the # of attempts has gone up, the shooting percentage has gone down. that suggests something to me.

Torvik has stats for close 2 (at the rim) and far 2 (midrange). Here is last year at Charlotte - he shot a lot of far 2s for the taste of an analytics aficionado, but it was "only" at a 1.3:1 ratio far:close :

Here he is so far this year - now it's about a 2.5:1 far:close ratio. While 41% is not bad for a far 2 FG%, it's horrible shot selection, at least from an analytics perspective.

FWIW, Mitchell is the only other player on the team with more far 2s than close 2s (and it's 12 vs. 8).

It's a pretty easy diagnosis and prescription for Patterson - no more far 2s.

I'm old. Torvik sounds like some guy who should be playing for the Finnish Hockey team in the Winter Olympics.

but your point is well taken. I may joke about analytics, but I realize they have value. and as you point out, long 2's are a low-value shot. It does make me sad a little bit thinking about Sam Jones nailing 18-foot bank shots for the mid-60's Celtics, but those games can live on in my memory while the real world marches forward.

Johnson playing him out of position to get him on the court maybe, not going to take Mike Mitchell's minutes, whatever it is it's not working, if he go's 1/11 against a B1G opponent they lose.

Torvik is more of a Norwegian name. 😏 Now, Toivo or Taisto, well there's a good Finn!
