More idiocy out of Maturi's office

I have no problem with Maturi's orginal press release. As Mulligan wrote, Maturi had no other option. Release no statement and the speculation will triple (must be really bad), anything else could be wrong and irresponsible.

“We are aware of the charges that have been filed against Trevor,” said Minnesota Athletic Director Joel Maturi. “Until we know all of the facts surrounding the charges it would be premature for us to have any further comment.”

Thinking about this - this press release was likely reviewed / approved by one of the U's lawyers. Hopefully, they would have cut out any speculative statements (if they are doing their job).

LOOKS LIKE. That means it's not definite. I was just pointing out that what she reported wasn't necessarily false. She basically said Maturi was leaning toward suspending Trevor. Maybe he was. We don't know.

"Breaking News - It looks like Trevor Mbakwe will be suspended"

What did you think when you read that?

Uh huh. This is what I've seen. So - you folks that think Maturi blew yet another load all over this one - what's the problem?

Just wait until you see the debacle over the women's golf coach. When that hits the fan it's going to splatter all over Gopher Nation and not in a good way. This is another million dollar law suit that the U will lose.

That one could get real interesting.
1. Sexual Orientation Discrimination?
2. Nepotism?
3. Circumventing degree requirements?

That may be true, but that's not what this thread is about.

What did Maturi do wrong regarding the TM arrest? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Maturi himself did absolutley nothing wrong with this case. He didn't jump to conclusions and then made a decision in a timely matter.

My only question is, how does Maturi find it so difficult to keep leaks private? First all the supposed football coach leaks, then it leaks he is going to suspend Trevor then that he isn't then it is official. I realize that is the world we live in these days, but sheesh. People in Maturi's group love to talk anonymously.

Thank you. The official word from Maturi's office was everything everyone here wanted (but supposedly didn't get, even though they did).

Regarding the leaks - how much of the football search leaks was speculation from rabid fans and gotta-be-the-first media and how much of it actual substance? I think the ratio was probably about 1000:1. Also, when you are searching for a coach and actually conducting interviews, etc. the story is not self-contained. You are contacting other offices at other schools with phones answered by other people. Planes also fly and land and can be seen by people with nothing better to do.

In the latest case, I'm taking an educated guess here, but based upon GL's "secret" source, Maturi probably told TM that suspension was on the table, but they would look into it more.

I really don't see the problem in any of this.

Now, as far as how the football search was managed overall....diff'rent story.......

I guess it all depends who the "sources" are. How much of it is people Maturi tells things to and how much of it is people just guessing?

But yes, Maturi did nothing wrong here IMO. Even had he suspended Trevor, while I would disagree with that choice 1,000%, it is not like he personally led anyone to believe anything either way. He handled it well, and he made the right decision (IMO). It sounds like him and Tubby discussed it together, which would be very nice for keeping Tubby happy and involved as well. I have no complaints, had he made the "wrong" decision without letting Tubby have lots of input as well (IMO) I would have been very frustrated. Especially after the power he gave Brewster.

I applaud him most for seeming to let Tubby have some say. Which I think is crucial for suspending any player on the basketball team. His statements were fine, and I like giving Tubby some authority in it. (I say he involved Tubby as most of the statements from Maturi and Tubby have been using "we decided" could this be just how they put it? Sure. But to me, I'd like to think Tubby had say in it. Especially based on the decision.
