Monter: New Gopher Peter Mortell Hopes to Get A Leg Up On The Punting Competition

Peter Mortell, a 6-foot-2, 193-pound punter from Green Bay (Wisc.) Notre Dame Academy, had a pretty good week. Mortell, who had just celebrated his 18th birthday eleven days ago, committed to Minnesota as a preferred walk-on Friday and got to sit in the owner’s box of the Green Bay-Philadelphia playoff game Sunday with a buddy whose father is on the Packers’ executive board. GopherHole.com caught up with Mortell after his flight back from Philadelphia to learn more about his decision to become a Golden Gopher and expectations for his freshman season.

Sounds great

I really like that he's a well-rounded athlete that has played on both sides of the ball.

This brings to light some misconceptions that a lot of people have about specialty people, kickers and punters. MANY of them, more than you would ever think, were very good athletes in High School; played either offense or defense (or both, like Peter) in addition to their kicking duties, and/or played multiple sports.

For many of them, it just happened that they realized that they were better than the pack at a specialty position and that's where they decided to focus their attention. It sounds like that's EXACTLY the case with Mortell here.
