Monday Fleck Press Conference

I agree and I'm questioning why Wright played so little. Just an odd game plan and explanation. I read: "We knew they were going to blitz and we were going to do a bunch of 1on1 balls to CAB, and once he went out, we were screwed."
My lord throw a few f'ing screens then. We're a D1 football program and we can't figure out how to correct some blitzes? Listening to this presser reminds me a lot of Pitino. 1 game plan and we're sticking to that 1 game plan no matter what. If the other team beats us at the game plan we're toast.

Yup, the fact there were no screens got me too, it's a basic response.... seems like we could have hit them hard with those.

Fresno and Georgia southern come to mind
2019- SDSU Down in 3rd, Fresno down 3 times in 2nd half/OT, Georgia Southern down late. Tied with Auburn in second half.
2018- Down to Fresno in second half, tied with Indiana in 4th(Blew big Lead)
2017- Tied with Illinois in the 4th.

granted, the Gophers were not "Trailing at halftime" in those games - but that means the Gophers had the lead at halftime, then lost the lead in the 2nd half before coming back to win. I'm not sure that p*ssing away the lead is something to be celebrated either.

You're an arrogant ass that has no comeback to anything other than to talk down to people. Congrats.

D1D I spall eny if thet ritte?

Nothing to do with arrogance. You're gonna make stupid a** statements about the Gophers losing to a D2 team, you're gonna get petty stuff back. Do better or go away.

What kind of game plan is that you have to rely on a single person for the whole game!!!! Last year Bateman, This year Mo. Then CAB. So who is next. Where is that next man up thing. PJ your game plan sucks! People around you're not working as they should be. Getting paid millions of dollars for this 4 play and one person focus???? Also fifth and sixth year players can master only RUTM ??? No wonder the team lost to BG! It is BG for FFS!!!! Again I hope someone who is in his circle will tell him that his OC crew will be his downfall.

Stop and think for a moment about the teams you listed and their standing in the world of college football.

The mere fact that we had to mount a comeback is telling. Outside of Auburn, that's pretty scary.

One scroll through your post history tells me different. You speak down to people as if you are better than them frequently. In fact, even the response above reeks of arrogance.

It's OK to be tough on a message board, if that is who you wanna be though.(y)

PS Give me the Mavs -12 against Bowling all day long and twice on Sunday.;);)

This is probably why PJ won’t want to take a higher profile job.

can you imagine him not pulling a struggling QB or benching his best available WR at a place like USC or ND.

The boosters would not be okay with that. Those program wants to win, not be some mother Teresa school for aspiring football players

I really don’t think PJ has that killer instinct that the top coaches have. He wants to win, but he won’t step on an opponents throat when they are down. Bama, Michigan this year, etc etc will do that.

I think a few years back he said no more Minnesota nice, maybe the Minnesota culture of being nice is rubbing off on him over time.

Say what you want, but your new job as a sports odd's maker in Vegas would be short lived, possibly with you ending up being knee capped! o_O

He may just be an old school coach who happens to be a high energy recruiter. As you said I am not sure a USC or ND are modern possibilities for someone who has never called plays.

It probably speaks to how anemic the team has been in the 3rd quarter. I would be interested to see the quarter scoring splits under Fleck. I suspect Q3 would be uuuugly.

EXACTLY!!!! And the bigger part of this equation is that was the game plan for Bowling Green?!?!? This is a little tongue in cheek, but they should have been able to go out against Bowling Green and just “wing it.” Instead, it appears we designed the game plan for Bowling Green around one wide receiver and a head coach and OC being paid millions of dollars couldn’t make an adjustment when he got dinging up in the first quarter? This is alarmingly concerning. Either the game plan is too damn complicated to begin with or the coaching staff is incompetent.
Autman-Bell left after the first Gopher play from scrimmage. They literally had a full game to make adjustments.

Both times Morgan was absolutely flattened by a blitzer, our receivers were all running deep routes. Morgan must have learned in high school how to anticipate a blitz and signal to a receiver that he should change his route to a short one to the zone the blitzer had vacated. Even if Sanford doesn't know about this surefire method of defeating a blitz Morgan should be able to do it on his own.

It's really not a balanced attack as far as attempts are concerned. This year we have passed on 33% of the plays vs. OSU, 27% vs. M-OH, 22% vs. Colorado and 24 vs. BG. The 2019 year our pass attempt percent: 27. We are a running team that mixes in a few passes here and there.

I don't think he's given that freedom. That is why they don't snap the ball until the last possible moment most of the time. They are taking direction from the sideline (OC) for what to run. I'm guessing that deviating from that plan would get them benched.

Nice to see the heroic comebacks against top tier teams.

we should not have been behind in any if those games requiring a come back.

“we have to get simple pretty quick”. That was the adjustment. Just don’t like hearing that. Even doing that a person would think they could grind out a 10 point win or so.

I like PJ, but saying to the press that you relied on one player as your game plan makes him look absolutely foolish and borderline incompetent. You don’t have a well thought out backup plan if that one player goes down to injury?? I’m shocked.

Regarding the 0-17 record when trailing at halftime, just to show you how horrible this stat is, how many years do you think it would take to turn that record into 17-17 (a 50% record). I submit to you that it could easily take 5 years or more to turn it into a paltry 50/50 record.

Also, his comment about Wright was bizarre. Maybe he was hurt, but I don’t know. To me, it sounds like PJ didn’t play him for some minor infraction (like poor attitude or whatever) because he thought we could still pull out a win against an inferior team. When we got behind, PJ thought he could still pull a win out of his butt and eventually time ran out due to his poor decision.

I‘m truly shocked that PJ said this non-sense in public and is not totally embarrassed that those words actually came out of his mouth.

Yep, it makes no sense and really puts the coaching staff in bad light.
I was at the Gustavus - Concordia game on Saturday. Gustavus lost their starting QB for the game on the first series. The back up QB was a starting WR and was a better runner than passer. The OC called plays that utilized those strengths. They were able to make adjustments all through the game to give their offense a chance. Can't understand why a D1 coach isn't able to make an adjustment to the game plan during the game.

0-17. That is definitely not Nekton Mentality.

Bowling Green had Nekton Mentality, during warm-ups it was easy to see the BG players were focused and the Gopher players were expecting an easy day.

Newsflash for ya bro, most teams that are leading at halftime win the game. 17-17 would not be paltry. 0-17 is not good, but 6-11 wouldn’t be bad.

Exactly, you wonder whether PJ actually believes one of the deciding factors as to why they put together 4 terrible quarters on offense and special teams, complete with multiple game changing bone-head penalties.....against Bowling Green....was that Chris Autman Bell got injured.

Not sure which is worse - actually believing that, or deciding that that is the best excuse to put out there publicly when you've had two days to watch tape and manufacture something plausible.

So, if you have two days to prepare to speak to the media and then you say this stuff out loud?? IDK this seems pretty revealing that PJ never had it or lost it…that explanation seems more clueless, more floundering, more embarrassing than his worst critic could make up.
He is as much as saying, the Bowling Green coach is just so much better than we are, I am as a coach, that I/we just had no answers. He still doesn’t know two days later? In the day of lawsuits, the fans and players should file a malpractice law suit.
Here is the worst part: PJ was positive we’d be good this year. Best team ever etc. He had no intention of being here next year. The Gophers will be very underwhelming next year and now he realizes he is stuck here because nobody else will want to court him.

Interesting concept in your final paragraph.

I had the same feeling watching his press conference last night. He knows now that he can't leave for a better job and next year will be tough but he eats difficult conversations for breakfast so he should be ok. I am a Fleck guy but I am just very frustrated with the trend we have seen this year watching a veteran team make mistakes and committ penalties etc.
