Mona on WCCO tonight.

I think Maturi realizes that he has PR issues, and the best PR guy he knows is Mona. Does it look funny? Sure, but given how Maturi has messed the football job up, he's probably pretty smart to find someone who understands how things will be spun by the media. He saw Brew and how THAT was received, and he was there to coach the coach. I doubt whether Dave was breaking down the mechanics or Kill's blocking scheme.

Looks funny on the surface, but I figure ANYONE is qualified to help Maturi.

Did Maturi hire Mona or did Bruninks hire Mona.

As to the "rumors"... you guys make it sound like, if there's a rumor, Maturi must have been the source. Just 'cuz the rumors changed every day, Maturi's criteria changed every day? That's what I ain't buyin'.

And as to whether they actually offered 3-4 M to guys like Mullen or Dungy, they said they did not. I personally believe it. Read what was actually said, not the paraphrases on this thread.

I wonder if guaranteed money played a part?? In one of the Bruininks interviews that appeared in the newspaper he mentioned something about preferring to set up contracts based heavily on incentives instead of a large base salary. I wonder if that had deterred any potential condidates?

I recall mentioning that Mona was going to be part of the search for the HC of football and got bichslapped that Mona was brought only for fundraising.

No, it wouldn't.

Look, I've taken a few shots at Dave Mona on this board over the years, but you all realize he wasn't hired as a consultant because of his radio work, right?

Mona is a PR/businessman who built his own small personal company into a multi-million dollar international player in the PR industry. He has some expertise in the area of marketing, PR, fundraising, business, etc. He was brought in to try to help sell the potential coaches on Minnesota, manage expectations, drum up public support, drum up private support and money, etc. That's his entire background. It had little to nothing to due with the fact he is co-host of the Sports Huddle.

Now, say what you want, he may not have done a good job (I really don't know if he did or didn't), but simply saying why did they let a lowly "radio guy" do this is not telling the entire story. That wasn't the reason he was asked to help.

That said, it isn't rocket science. I'm guessing PA would probably be able to pick out a coach who could win games in Minnesota with the Vikings.

LMAO @ that post.

This had everything to do with who Dave Mona was with the U and nothing to do with his PR firm. If it was about hiring the best PR guy out there:

1) The PR around the Gophers wouldnt be so f'n $h^tty right now
2) It wouldn't have been Dave Mona who'd have been hired

A good PR guy would have put the brakes on this trainwreck of a coaching search on day 1. He would have made it so we would all be completely overjoyed to have Kill...he wouldnt be like Mona doing a tiny radio interview the day after trying to patch up the damage.

Mona was co-pilot on this kamikazee mission of a head coaching search and its completely laughable that he was ever put in any sort of position to make a decision.

I have been one of Kill's biggest supporters since before he was hired but I am not buying all of this, it sounds like spin to me. If we were really willing to go up to $4million on a coach, it must have been for Dungy or Harbaugh only. I can't belive that if we offerred Dan Mullen $3-$3.5 million that he wouldn't be the coach today.

I think they were willing to spend some money, but only for the unrealistic candidates. I also don't believe that Kill was last resort.

It probably is some spin, but in Maturi's and Mona's defense

1. The more I listen to Kill, look at his coaching methods, philosophy and the dedication of his staff and see how the players are responding to him, he is looking very much like a great hire.

2. Indiana, Syracuse and Colorado do not seem to be getting much attention from any of the ones we felt the U missed out on so it is something to keep in mind.
