I don't understand the point you are trying to make

We need to stop comparing our program to Iowa and Wisconsin, we aren't even close.

Good point. Start with the programs from Vermillion and Fargo. Then start thinking about the one in Bloomington. Long, long way to go.

Bloomington?? This is clear evidence of the intelligence of the average sconnie. When they say 6-10 kids can't point out Georgia on a map, they're talking about sconnies...

As much as I want to bash Badger fans... I really cannot do so at this point. They have every right to be proud of their team, and our team has a long way to go. We have to deal with it.

It's not about them being proud of their team, it's about some of them trolling a Gopher football message board.

As to the the people saying we can't compare ourselves to Iowa and WI, I think you are missing the point. Our football program is obviously not on their level, that's the entire point. The thread is entitled "...it can happen here". I'm sure he meant that having a good football program like Iowa and Wisconsin CAN happen here (sort of implies it isn't here yet, but it could be possible). The guy never compared our respective programs, that would be silly.

However, you can compare situations. We are all three Big 10 schools with similar breakdown of instate talent (well, with WI), same conference, etc.

For some reasons that we've talked about I think it's a little more difficult here (UW program helps them boost their walk ons, and being the only show in town in Madison helps them too), but generally his point shouldn't have had anyone confused that he was hoping that one day we could have a program like WI or IA and not that we are already comparable.

Hold on there! Trolling? Not at all. Here to do two things that you all like to do. 1. Talk Wisconsin football. 2. Get humbled a little.

This is my "go to" when I feel confident in our team. I can always count on you guys to point out how bad our team really is. This is all just "smoke and mirrors, what goes around, comes around, you'll have your revenge, Wisconsin will never be Michigan," etc. I've been here on these MN message boards for the better part of 13 years getting that same message from you guys. You guys play an important role in keeping my humility. THANKS!

(... and being the only show in town in Madison helps them too)

I've never understood/bought this assertion.

How do you explain the well-documented successes of other teams in similar situations? USC is college football royalty in downtown Los Angeles, Miami is an elite program, Georgia Tech is overshadowing their "college town" instate rivals (Georgia) in Atlanta. TCU built a CFB powerhouse in 10 years directly in the shadow of Jerry World and the Dallas Cowboys... even teams like Arizona State and Northwestern have achieved success.

Being located in a metropolitan area does not serve as a disadvantage. Nor is it necessarily an advantage.

It all comes down to people. You have yet to find the right people.

You are a troll. Your explanations don't make any sense. I have never read a single thing this year that WI wasn't the best team in the Big 10. If anything there is a bunch of us that HOPE to be like your program. Look at the OP, you who ribbed a bit, his entire posting is that we HOPE what is happening at WI can happen here.

So you said you come here to be "humbled"? Which is odd to begin with because if your head is getting bloated over what the WI football team is doing, it says a bit about your life. But anyways, you said you come here to be humbled because you can count on us to tell you how bad your team is? Where? The OP wrote a thread wishing to be as good as you guys, and you ripped him. If you want to feel better about your team you should come here, because most of us hope to one day have a program as good as WI.

I get your point but again I wasn't saying it is impossible to win in a major metro area, I just think it's a little more difficult...

USC doesn't have an NFL team and there is quite a bit of debate over how much the lack of an NFL team has helped USC (ie...being the only show in town as far as football).

Georgia Tech is having a great run but I think it is easier to have success at Georgia. Georgia's head coach is on the hot seat and he has a career .730 winning percentage, he is currently 4-1 in the SEC, and they've finished in the top 10 4 times in the last 10 seasons. My point...Georgia is a premier football school. Georgia Tech is probably better now, but in the long run, i'd bet on Georgia.

There are a few others who have had some success and there are a lot of examples of schools who struggle, I just think it's easier for a school in a typical college town to cultivate success than in a major metro area.

The last few seasons, I have genuinely believed that Wisconsin is overrated. They won the games they needed to win to maintain their credibility, but their recent 10 win seasons could have easily been 7 or 8 win seasons. This year I somehow think you guys are underrated... and have a legitimate shot at the national title. It kills me to say that, but if I'm going to be fair in my past criticisms of your teams, I have to admit when you are clearly a cut above the rest of the Big Ten.
