MN Daily: Stop citing moral victories after another fourth quarter bowl game collapse

per the Daily:

Here’s the simple fact: If Minnesota can beat Nebraska in back-to-back seasons, silence more than 100,000 fans at The Big House, and embarrass rival Iowa by 37 points, it should certainly be able to get past Missouri on a neutral field in the same season.

So stop spouting off about how, even though Minnesota lost, there were more Gophers fans in attendance. Stop saying you’re happy to be there. Stop being content with mediocrity when you know your team can do better.

Appreciate the rushing success Cobb had under Kill. Admire the stout defense Tracy Claeys built. Respect the added attention Minnesota puts toward special teams preparation.

But don’t cheer when all of those things come apart in the fourth quarter of a bowl game for the third-straight season.

It was exactly that sentiment that got Mason fired. Will be interesting to see what the masses are saying in 2 years if we plateau.

I'm cool if the current guy ups his aggressiveness by 15-25%
 

No one is talking about a moral victory. It was a disappointing loss. But what needs to be retired is the idea that if you aren't sufficiently taking a crap on your team after a loss that you're talking about a moral victory. No one is celebrating the loss.
 


I always get a kick out of these articles/comments that tell us how we should react and feel. As if everyone being completely pissed off after yesterday's game will change anything. It's okay to be mad and disappointed at the performance while still being proud of the season as a whole, happy we played in a big bowl, had a great turnout at the bowl game, etc.

Being disappointed or proud are not exclusive. You can be both, and I don't think that means you accept mediocrity or whatever.

As upset as I am with some of his decisions yesterday, I'm still a Kill believer, and I'll bet we won't have to find out in two years because we won't plateau. If Kill doesn't have a win against Wisconsin, a win in a bowl game, and a finish (post bowl game) in the top 25 by then, I'll be shocked.

Totally agree. I dont see anyone talking about a moral victory. Yes it was a quality bowl game and they lost against an opponent probably better than them. Being realistic does not mean you are talking about a moral victory.

Pig, Jug, Bell & Broken Chair all reside in our house. Played on New Years Day against the SEC #2.

Nothing anyone at either crappy newspaper in town or any blogger is going to say that will deter me from being proud of the great year the Gophers had and the excitement I have for the future.

Yup. There isn't a lot of "happy just to be there" on this board. People are mad that they lost and steamed because the game was certainly winnable, if not for some questionable choices and sloppy mistakes.

I have been behind the Gophers my entire life, all of 55 years. Led by a father who played for the Gophers. Never have I thought we had a moral victory, but I have seen losses that meant something. If we go back through the years we have had few years that meant much and a few years that meant more. This was one of those years that meant more: 8 wins, the Pig and the Jug, Nebraska in Lincoln and the first New Years bowl since I was two. Wow, what a year and the losses to Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Missouri meant something. We are getting closer; not moral victories, but losses that meant we are moving in a better direction. Go Gophers!!

Lots of good points on this thread. In fact, a pretty fair supply of good posts on GH following the loss. At some point I wanted this win more for the seniors than for myself, JK, the staff, the fans, the school, the town, or the state. That's the most painful part for me. This is a pretty special collection of men that will never wear a Gopher uniform again. Bummer.
