per the Daily:
Mbakwe continues career abroad
Correction: Former Daily reporter Grant Donald fabricated an interview with Chris Fleming, coach of the German basketball team Brose Baskets Bamberg, for this story. The false quotes have been removed and Grant has been terminated. The Daily's investigation into Grant's body of work is ongoing.
“Initially, the European option really didn’t appeal much to me,” Mbakwe said. “Everyone grows up wanting to play in the NBA and on ESPN so it was tough to realize that wasn’t going to happen. Looking back though, I am definitely glad I pursued my opportunities in Europe. I feel like I’m a better person because of it.”
After going undrafted in the 2013 NBA draft, Mbakwe immediately shifted his focus to Europe and signed with Italian team Vitrus Roma. After one year in Italy, the 6-foot, 8-inch power forward signed with German team Brose Baskets, leading them to a German League Championship last month.
“For me, basketball is basketball no matter which country you play in,” Mbakwe said. “Once we won the [German] championship and I got a chance to lift the trophy, I knew this was where I was supposed to be.”
