I moved to the Pensacola, FL area about a year ago and wear my maroon and gold with pride down here. Except when I get mistaken for a Mississippi State fan, it's pretty cool. Meet lots of snowbirds and transplants and visitors from B1G country.

The interesting change in the past year is how much people are talking about Minnesota down here. This part of FL is all about Alabama (50%) and Florida/FSU (40%) and LSU (5%) so these folks generally don't know anything about the B1G other than tOSU is pretty good and Michigan sucks (seems to be a universal feeling in college football).

But now when I mention I am from MN, they don't look at me like I am from Canada, they say things like "MN is pretty good this year" or "MN came out of nowhere this year" and the best thing I have heard since I moved here is "MN is getting back to the old days!" which was said by a 90 year old Alabama alum who knew MN when they didn't suck.

It is cool that we are getting back on the stage, I have to imagine it is helping Kill & Co recruit down here and if we can win that bowl game, I see us taking another big step.

Go Gophers!

That's awesome to hear. I think we got a lot of national pub this year and that certainly helps. Thanks for sharing!

I think your misleading everyone with your name. FIFY...

I know we share maroon with Miss St., but their other primary color is white. I would think telling them apart shouldn't be too difficult.

As you mention that 90 year old Alabama fan, I can't help but wonder what my dad would think (especially if the Gophers take the next steps). He died in 2006 but had remained a Gopher fan his entire life after having first hand memories of the glory years and national titles. He never waivered on his Gopher affinity even though I sort of unplugged myself from my own fandom during the Wacker years. It was amazing how he could just wrap himself in Bruce Smith or George Franck immediately following another bad Gopher loss. He never gave up on the idea the Gophers could one day do it again.

They haven't done "it" yet, but I do wonder what he would think of the current condition of the program.

It is nice to hear other people around the country are noticing the Gophers. It has been toooooo long.

My oldest brother is the same way:)
It's good for the health of the sport for teams to return to previous glory years or even teams that have never experienced success have it (like Miami in the early 80's). Michigan and Wisconsin should just be happy that they have had a good run and cheer for some of their peers now.

One time in New Orleans for Mardi Gras I had a guy ask me if I had any troubles getting into the country? I told him "No, we're a state. We've got a flag and everything!". Another genius upon hearing I was Minneapolis asked me if I was big Colts fan? Sorry for the tangent, had to share.

Maroon and a block M...doesn't matter if the piping is white or gold...it confuses many down here.

Yes, I had someone ask me about the Rocky mountains once, and when I looked confused he said isn't MN big sky country?

I too have gotten a handful of positive comments wearing my Gopher stuff.

And yes, there is an enormous amount of native Georgians and South Carolinians who have no freaking clue where Minnesota is.

"Some people out there in our nation don't... have maps..." Thank you very much Miss Teen South Carolina.

Oh, it's not just down South. When we lived in California we were asked numerous times "how often do you get to New York?" When we asked people why, they always said "well, Minnesota is back East isn't it?" When we told them it was still over 1,000 miles away it was usually followed by a very puzzled look.

They may have maps in SC, but they don't know how to read one.

We just moved and have a MN shaped cutting board. The people packing up my house (in CA) thought it was the shape of Texas!

When I'm in California visiting clients and they ask about Minnesota, I have told a lot of people that back in grade school and high school that we would have our mother throw blubber out the back door to distract the polar bears and give us time to get on our snowmobiles and head off to school. A shocking number of people believe me.

Well there are so many polar bear stabbing incidents in MN that your story makes sense to me.

When I lived in Ohio(mid 70's) many people asked me if MN was all mountains. When I tried to explain to them what that electrical cord coming out my car grill was for they thought I was making it up.

Well on a lighter note; I was just in England on business and the bartender in this moderate sized city called peterburough heard I was from Minnesota. She said "one moment" went in the back and came out with a Culpepper Jersey. I do find that most people on the coasts tend to be very region centric. They really dont care about places outside of their state.

(I just realized after posting I joined in 2008 and only have 36 posts. I read this forum every day. I should post more often.)

Heard some squabbling over at the Helium Hut the other day. Mostly about Minnesota matters and points of conversation.

I was in Salt Lake City 2 week ago for business. I struck a conversation with the guy next to me at the bar. Turns out he was an Alabama fan now working in California. When Mentioned is was from MN he couldn't stop talking about Jerry Kill and how much better the Gophers are. The word is getting out.
