Go Gophers!!

Would be interesting to know what the comment he was responding to looked like. That feels like a pretty targeted reply to something someone said to him.

I was on the bandwagon, but then Mitch Leidner was our quarterback.

It's not Mitch's fault, but our fans haven't had a lot to really cheer about for the past few decades. We aren't really in a spot to be pushing away potential bandwagon jumpers. If they want to jump on, we should gladly take them.

I think the average fan realize and understands how hard the players work. And the effort they put forth on the field. But that doesn't always equate to victory and success.

Gopher fans expected a lot more this season based on what the coaches and players said and results from last year. It didn't happen. In spite of how hard to the team tried. So the critics have lots of reason to pi$$ and moan. And players need to have a thick skin and deaf ears.

I'm 100% behind you Mitch.

Maybe this can serve as additional motivation for the boys in the bowl game to win one for themselves and, secondly, give the fans what they expected.

I'm old. I love the Gophers and cheer for them ardently, but I just walk behind the bandwagon nowadays. Better for my health and sanity. Gotta love Mitch's fire though.

There will always be complainers and trolls in a town full of Iowa and Wisconsin fans and Gopher fans bitter after 50 years of nearly non-stop mediocrity. If anyone asked those Gopher players he's talking about back in August if they'd be happy if they went 5-7 and got to a bowl game in Detroit, their response would probably be worse than any of the mocking he's getting now.

It's certainly not a quote worth getting worked up over, one way or the other. But maybe next time Mitch should go with something like.

"It certainly was not the season we hoped for, but we're excited to be playing another game and building on that for 2016. Hop on the bandwagon now because the future is looking bright"

Once upon a time, I think people viewed college sports differently than pro sports, but those lines have been blurred or erased. To some extent, I think the move by some toward more rights/compensation for college athletes has made college athletes seem more like pros.

Right or wrong, people who are paying big money for tickets, seat licenses and mandatory donations aren't happy with the "good old college try." they expect results, and if the results don't live up to their expectations, they feel they have the right to boo, or post negative comments on message board and online newspaper comments.

I agree but the kid has had his share of crap thrown his way. The guy is a winner.

"Feel" is the operative word here. I "feel" like booing but I don't . The arseholes that say they are booing the coaches, not the players, are flat out liars. Booing a college player makes you a flat out lout.

"Feel" doesn't excuse INCREDIBLY bad behavior.

"Feelings" don't excuse bad behavior. An "arse-hole" pretending to be a mind-reader isn't that excusable either. I haven't booed a college player. Nor pretended to be a physic.

Didn't realize the program was to the point where we can start being selective about the types of fans we want to follow us.

Exactly. Basically, the bandwagon breaks down often enough that there's no real reason to jump on it: you always catch up to it even if you are just walking.

Agreed.

That was my first thought, too. Leidner has a lot of chutzpah calling out casual fans whose interest is flagging after a very disappointing season. The casual fans - the bandwagon jumpers, essentially - are the difference between this team being popular in the local sports marketplace or not.

Hopping on at Mitch's command is like the naked trusting the blind in a field of glass shards.

Cut him a break. He has passion and pride, I wish more people had those traits. The problem with a Pro-Sports town is that people are not as rah-rah as the typical college town. That is just one of the issues you have to deal with when you play at the U.
