In the "what does it mean" category, Western Kentucky played at Iowa last week and at Indiana last night.

Indiana pulled out a hotly contested 73-71 win on a Tyra Buss drive to the rim with 3 seconds remaining. The Lady Toppers missed a pretty good three chance at game's end. Earlier, Buss hit a three to tie the game at 71.

At Iowa, it was 93 all at the end of regulation with the Lady Toppers clanging a decent turn around three off the rim as the clock expired. Iowa finished off WKU in OT 104-97.
 

In inter-conference RPI games: Ohio State defeated Washington in Columbus 85-76. At Uconn, the Huskies raced past Maryland 97-72.

In other games of note: Saturday's Gopher opponent, Wake Forest (2-2), lost to home standing Rutgers (4-0), 65-51. Rutgers started the game on a 12-0 run and never looked back.

In Lincoln, Creighton (2-1) used two 11-0 first half runs defeating Nebraska (3-1) 64-49.
 

Jim Foster's Chattanooga team defeated Indiana in Bloomington 64-61. The Mocs led 63-57 with 17 seconds remaining; but allowed the Hoosiers back into the game. However, Tyra Buss missed an open three attempt with a couple of seconds remaining and the resulting scramble ran out the clock.
 

Illinois (3-2) fell at home to Western Illinois (4-1) 77-67. Late in the second quarter the Leathernecks trailed by 13 and struggled hitting in the paint; but shooting 14-35 from three and 21-27 from the line will overcome a lot of deficits.
 

A few interesting Thanksgiving tourney scores.

Yesterday, the Badgers lost a back in forth game to Syracuse 77-74. Cayla McMorris (21 points) went on a five point run to tie the game at 74 with :40 seconds remaining. Today Wisconsin (2-3) lost to George Washington, 61-46.

Rutgers (4-1) lost a hard fought game to #3 South Carolina, 78-68.

Yesterday, Nebraska lost to Buffalo 82-72. Felicia Legette-Jack's Bulls closed the game on a 20-6 run. Today Nebraska (4-2) defeated Coastal Carolina, 55-47.

Ohio State defeats Florida Gulf Coast and Kelsey Mitchell breaks NCAA 3 point record.


Thanks to a highly efficient and dominant game Friday, Ohio State's Mitchell is now the NCAA's all-time leader in made 3-point field goals. The 5-foot-8 senior guard hit seven 3-pointers and now has 402 for her career.

The ninth-ranked Buckeyes, in Las Vegas as part of the Play4Kay Shootout at Mandalay Bay, beat Florida Gulf Coast 104-62 in Friday's semifinal round. The crowds for many holiday tournaments tend to be thin, and this one carries no television coverage.

The anonymity hardly stopped Mitchell from shining. She entered the game three 3-pointers short of the mark of 398 held by UConn's Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, then blew through it with six 3-pointers and 23 points in the first half.

The record-breaker came with 7:06 left in the second quarter. Mitchell took a pass in the left corner on a secondary fast break, flicked her left wrist and watched the ball drop as she fell to the floor, also managing to draw a foul. But as she walked to the free throw line, the handful of Buckeyes fans in attendance were probably more aware of the milestone than Mitchell.

It took overtime; but Ohio State defeated Stanford for the second time this season.

After struggling for the first three quarters, the No. 9 Buckeyes found their groove in the fourth quarter and overtime and would come back to win the Play4Kay Showcase with a 94-82 overtime victory over No. 14 Stanford.

Kelsey Mitchell scored a season-high 37 points and made an OSU single-game record 19 free throws on 20 attempts. She had 25 of her 37 points after halftime. For the tournament, Mitchell averaged 30.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists and shot 53 percent from the floor en route to being named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Sierra Calhoun kept the Buckeyes within striking distance in the first three quarters while the rest of the team was struggling to find their range. She made a total of four three-pointers in the game and finished with a season-high tying 15 points.

Asia Doss was the hero of overtime for the Buckeyes. She scored the Buckeyes’ first seven points in the extra session and then assisted on a clutch three-pointer by Calhoun. Doss also finished with 15 points and a total of four assists.
 

A couple of other tournament scores of note:

Indiana (4-2) lost at St. Marys (4-1) 88-82. The score was tied at 76 with 3:56 remaining.

The Stephanie White era at Vanderbilt continued it's slow start as Vanderbilt (1-6) lost in OT to Wisconsin (3-3) 73-71. Regulation ended at 69 all.
 

Future Gopher opponent Georgetown (3-3) defeated Northwestern (5-2) 55-54. Georgetown hit one of two free throws at games end.

Washington State (3-4) came back from a 10 point half time deficit to defeat Rutgers (5-2) 63-60. In the fourth quarter both teams combined for 20 points with ten apiece.

Illinois (5-3) lost at New Mexico (7-0) 97-68.

Maryland won at Miami 79-71.
 



New Mexico must be decent, eh? They beat Marquette.
 


I notice New Mexico got 19 pts in the latest AP poll, putting them at #29.
Minnesota got 5 pts, putting them tied for #34. Getting noticed!
 

I caught a couple of endings on ACC network.

Wisconsin entered the fourth quarter leading Pitt 53-43. The Badgers won 58-57. The final score came with 2:45 remaining when Wisconsin's Courtney Fredrickson nailed a corner three. There was a lot of stumbling and bumbling to close it out.

Maryland won at Virginia 60-59. The Terps tried to give away the game with an errant in bounds pass that allowed the Caviliers to put up an open jumper and two pretty make able put backs before time ran out.
 





Iowa might turn out to be better than Michigan
 

Purdue fell at home to Ball State 66-60. The Cardinals led by Moriah Monaco (18 points, 11 rebounds) and Carmen Grande (17 points) held the Boilers to 7 third quarter points taking a 44-32 lead. Purdue battled back starting the fourth quarter but Ball State still found open lanes to the rim and added a couple of big time threes to complete the win. Ball State is now 7-0 and Purdue 5-4.
 

Former Hawkeye starter Whitney Jennings helped the Butler Bulldogs (6-4) defeat the Badgers (6-5) in Indy 69-62. Jennings scored 12 points and added 3 assists, 3 steals and 5 rebounds.
 

A couple of games of notes:

At St. Bonaventure, the Bonnies (5-5) defeated Penn State (8-3) 65-62. PSU's stalled in the second half when they were outscored 37-22. For the game, Penn Sate was 4-28 from three.

In a wild double OT, Nebraska (7-3) won at Drake (5-5) 89-84.

It appeared the Huskers won at the regulation horn when an inbound lob with 1.4 seconds left from Jasmine Cincore was tipped back to Eliely, who dropped a floater through the net from the left side of the lane.

But upon review, officials determined the clock wasn't started on time and the basket was waved off.

"The official ruling is that it was clearly tipped by (Drake's Becca) Hittner, who was guarding the inbounder, that Jasmine's pass … was tipped by the defender, which would have started the clock much earlier," Williams said she was told. "That was the ruling and we had to go with it and then kind of overcome that and find a way to keep bouncing back."

I was watching the second half of DePaul's 92-63 victory when I realized Rebekah Dahlman wasn't playing for DePaul. Apparently, Dahlman suffered an injury in in the season's first game and hasn't played since. As far as I could glean, it appears she has a leg injury requiring a cast.

I was wondering what happened to her. I reported in an earlier post that she was the leading scorer in a preseason game. She seems so snakebit.
 

Northwestern's (6-6) visit to Missouri State (4-6) did not go well. Kelly Harper's Lady Bears led 43-30 at the half and then poured it on defeating the Wildcats 90-59. Missouri State was 15-26 from three.
 

Northwestern is looking terrible. The Gophers better handle them on Big 10 opening day.

Yes, we can't even blame Welsh-Ryan for a loss because during the remodeling the 'Cats are playing in the classically quirky Evanston Township High School Gym which, being constructed in 1925, is older than Williams Arena.
 

Something worth noting: In Iowa's (11-1) 71-47 win in Cedar Falls versus Northern Iowa (3-7), the Hawkeyes point guard, Tania Davis, went out of the game at the start of the second quarter with a left knee injury. Davis was bumped on a fastbreak layup attempt and landed out of bounds under the hoop. Davis returned to the bench before halftime; but did not play. After half time, she was in uniform, on the bench with ice on the knee. Last season, Davis' ACL injury was to the right knee.
 

Penn State (9-4) lost at American (7-4) in overtime 75-66. American out scored PSU 20-11 in OT and 20-10 in the fourth quarter.

On Saturday, Penn State won at Pitt (6-5) 59-48. Former Gopher Danielle Garven had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Panthers.
