Of course I’m a homer but those refs seemed to be Indy homers too! And the announcers had nothing to say when after being down double digits the Gopher took the lead in the second half.

If we could have sunk just a handful of those many shots that didn’t drop it’s a different game. We will live and die by the long shots and when they don’t fall it’ll be painful. The Hoosiers D was better than ours today too.

The refs were fine.
Ifs and buts...
We will struggle to win any game in the B1G. Clearly Michigan was vastly overrated. If we win 5 games between now and the B1G tournament I will be happy.

No major issue with the refs but I do wonder what Loewe has to do in order to draw a foul. Has been the case all year where he seems to drive to the basket, get absolutely murdered, yet somehow never get a foul called on the defender.

I agree with this but we are a much better team than I thought we would be and we have enough skill/experience etc. to win up to half our games if we shoot better from outside, but we still lack the inside game for scoring and rebounding. So when outside shooting is below 30% (was 20% today) we don't have much of a chance unless the other team turns the ball over a lot more. We only turned it over 5x and Indiana 6x. We were only out rebounded by 5 in total today.

We aren't going to win many games when the opponent makes more 3's than we do.

No real problem here either,but Ben at some point, must stand up to refs on behalf of his team, and himself ,to gain respect from them. They are getting hosed home and away by all 50/50 calls.

Agreed on this. Love what Ben has done, needs to do this though. It’s a big part of getting extra calls.
 

6 points in the last 9 minutes of the game today. Scored 4 points in the first 10 minutes of second half vs Illinois. Defensively this team is fine - the offensive abyss is an issue - i wont break it down further but we need shooters - #1 should not be taking perimeter jumpers nor should he be dribbling the ball down low

Do you really think that refs bow down to those coaches who berate them? I would like to see some data on this. I think carping at the refs can have the opposite effect if you are the clearly the underdog. If berating officials worked, you'd see every coach employ that tactic.
 

It seems as we don't have anyone who has decent post up skills down low or play with back to the basket. IMO Battle would excel in that role and Willis, especially if has has an undersized G on him.

I think the Gophers have to show other things with their offense other than launching 3's or power drive it to the hoop, which they are good at.

The best coaches do and it’ll get you a call or two here and there. None of best coaches don’t get on the officials. On 50/50 calls, these guys get all over them. I’m not saying that’s the way it should be, but that’s the way it is.

These officials are human so I do believe it sways them if you get on them hard for convincing them they missed a call. Gotta stay in their head. Try to get the next one.

Agreed. Love the team, but the great start couldn't last. League is strong and schedule is brutal. 5 more wins gets Ben BIG Coach of the year .

Not all. Jay Wright and Tony Bennett do not take that approach. Their approach is to recognize how tough the job is and to be dignified in conversation. That is easier when that is who you are. That is Ben and he would not want to be phony plus the theory of not providing any excuses or distractions. Plenty of refs appreciate this approach. Also. i never see some anti Gopher bias. The refs do a heck of a job of being fair by doing the best that they can.

I would argue Jay Wright will get them on a little bit. Tony Bennett you are right.

I agree you've gotta be who you are.

Agreed, these coaches know there not going to get the current call changed, but it's about the next call, or getting that 50/50 call at the end. Izzo, is a master at it. Keady and Knight and Bo Ryan were good at it as well.
 

There do seem more coaches who yell and complain than otherwise, but another good coach who always seemed to control his temper was John Beilein.

I understood the strategy of letting certain Indiana players shoot the three but we were 6-8 feet from them at times and gave them practice gym shots.
 

The good coaches pick their spots. Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley is the worst complainer of the bunch. There’s never been a call against his team that he agreed with. Should be T’d every game.

Spot on. Worst i ever saw was Kevin O'Neill. Think calm plays very well with refs over the long hall.

When they were predicted to win 0-1 conference game, he should. I really meant the jump to 6 wins would be so huge compared to what everyone thought, and with this line up, Ben stands a chance.

There's absolutely zero chance Ben will get the COY award at 6-14. 11-9, maybe 10-10, sure, but no chance at 6-14, even if you are way above expectations you still have to accomplish something, like going to the Tourney. 6-14, were still probably playing on weakling Wednesday. Quite frankly Gard's got to be the early favorite, pretty lost last year's entire starting five except for Brad, and Johnny Davis has turned into an all world player

Agree. If this team manages to make the tourney then Johnson will deserve to be the COY in the Big Ten and maybe the whole NCAA for that matter.

But no matter how all that plays out, he is at least proving he knows what he is doing and giving everyone reason to hope for the future of the program under his leadership.
 

Carmody, in 2003-04 season was 8-8 in conference and 14-15 overall. That's the worst conference and season record of any Big Ten COY (They were 12-17 and 3-13 the previous year)

Harping and berating the ref's works just fine for Izzo...not so much for Pitino.
