Was anyone else a little surprised that Reid Travis was the Metro POY and not Tyus?

Tyus was the Pioneer Press player of the year if that makes you feel better.

Reid was the best player on the best team. You can see why the Tyus is the higher ranked recruit, but Reid was more of a dominant player this year.

I WANT THEM BOTH AND I WANT THEM NOW.

Just maybe what myself, others, and what the metro coaches have known; Tyus doesn't play defense.

ruppert - Tyus is the best player to ever come out of Minnesota. There are times on the court where he is playing chess and everyone else is playing checkers. If you would like to focus on his occasional lack of defensive intensity, that is fine. We get it. You do not need to point it out anymore. Thanks.

Not to mention, how many basketball studs (anywhere) come out of HS known for their defense? There are some exceptions, but college is where most of these guys learn how to play defense.

I like Reid as PoY over Tyus. Both great players, no question. To me it came down to Tyus' injury. He missed 5ish games which is more than 15 percent of the season. Oh yeah, and by the way, his team went undefeated in those games, including a win over Hopkins. That is not a knock on Tyus nor to say they coulda won the state title without him. It's just Reid played 33 games, Tyus 5 or 6 fewer. Between the #1 and #2 players that's a tie-breakers worth of difference. And like the guy said, Reid is the best player on the best team, though I do wish that Apple Valley had played DeLaSalle in March. Still, a lot of people underestimate Reid.

All right, calm down. Let's see what happens before we claim that Tyus is better than Kevin McHale.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the injury.

I will take Vaughn. The kid can flat our score. Best scorer in this state since Troy Bell...

So does Isaiah Dahlman....

I will take Vaugh the best scorer in the state since Troy Bell.

As a High Schooler Tyus doesn't look anymore dominant than El-Amin was.Reminds me a little of Adam Boone. After watching Travis the last two years I thought he improved a lot from his soph to junior year and with the fact he didn't miss any games should have been metro player of the year.

I saw Broman play at the State Tournament. IMHO, he is NOT a D-1 player. He's a good spot-up shooter, but he's a classic tweener: not quick enough to be a PG, and not athletic enough to be a SG. I think he could have a nice career at the D2 level. also, in the games I saw, Broman scored quite a few points by releasing early on defense and cheating downcourt for a long pass and a layup. Or, as we called it in my day, "basket-hanging." Broman is a product of longer seasons, and a player who was allowed to pad his stats against (occasionally) inferior competition.

There all great and we need them to learn how to play with each other when they get to the U

It's not so much that Tyus can't play defense. It's that he doesn't want to.

Let's not put the cart before the horse. I can think of many players from this state that played or are currently playing in the NBA. Let's see what Jones does in the NBA and what kind of career he has there before the hyperbole.

I meant he is the best high school player ever in Minnesota and I stand by it. I hope all of you that are commenting have actually seen him play - not to validate my point, but because it would be a shame to miss out on such a talent in your own backyard.

Adam Boone was supposedly the next great thing. A 5 star going to UNC. We know how that turned out. Khalid El-Amin was extremely highly regarded, as was Mr. Kardashian. Also, these rankings haven't been around very long, so it's impossible to compare where past players would rank in comparison to Jones. I think you're on safer ground saying he's the best player we've had in years..

We would all be bummed to lose this good of a player. But s he better than Kevin McHale? Better than Mark Olberding? There have been some pretty good players that have had great pro careers.

Khalid was the best player to come out of Minnesota that I have seen. He was an amazing scorer, clutch beyond belief, and an outstanding ball handler. The difference between he and Tyus was that at this point El-Amin looked to score rather than looking to pass.

I think they are both incredible but I think Khalid was better.

Khalid certainly is the best guard who ever finished his high school career in MN. I'll wait til after next year to worry about comparisons of Khalid and Tyus. Certainly Jones has a chance to be #1 or #2. A 2nd state title would be a must.

Best non-guard? Olberding was better than McHale in high school and through about age 24. Depends on what you mean, Best to come out of.... Best through his entire career? OK, McHale. Best as a high schooler? Olberding by a long shot.

The kid from Melrose is the best I've seen.

I saw Tyus play and he is a tremendous talent. One thing for sure he is not nearly as strong as Khalid was in high school at the same stage. Khalid was like a bull in a china shop when he got into the lane. At this stage I think Khalid is the better player.
