Also who was the guy who sang The Star Spangled Banner all those years at the Dome? He was in the music department I believe? He could really belt it out. They used to have a guy sing "Hail Minnesota" at half time. It was so good...with the lyrics and a good voice, it is a powerful song....without, it can a be slow dirge.
I believe you are thinking of Jim Mitchell. He was a former drum major and had a fantastic voice. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2004 at age 59. Way too young. Also who was the guy who sang The Star Spangled Banner all those years at the Dome? He was in the music department I believe? He could really belt it out.
A little factoid. I posted "Who hates Iowa? We hate Iowa!" after Saturdays victory by ISU on Facebook. I was told to not be so mean. I told the person "It's tradition and it breaks out anywhere and anytime." The person thinks I was just kicking them when they are down.Chanting our opinion of our neighbors to the south every game.
Who hates Iowa?
Yes thanks, it was Jim. Great voice.I believe you are thinking of Jim Mitchell. He was a former drum major and had a fantastic voice. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2004 at age 59. Way too young.
I think you are short selling the band by quite a bit by throwing out a blanket statement that most schools have bands. Using your logic, Ohio State dotting the "i" isn't a tradition because everyone has a band. I haven't seen another band rotate the "M", do the cascade sequence, etc. - and I love those traditions.Boy, I hear "traditions" and I tend to think of things that go way back - as in time-honored traditions.
the band is great, but most schools have bands. so I'm trying to think of something that is specific to MN football, and I'm coming up a little blank. I used to go to games at Memorial Stadium, and outside of the band, I'm having trouble coming up with a distinct MN football tradition.
I don't know how long they've done the "Goldy does pushups after a score," but that is what I'm talking about. back in the day, Jules Perlt would always announce the scores of the other games backwards - that is something I associate with going to Gopher games.
so how long do you have to do something before it becomes a "tradition." like Iowa fans waiving to the kid's hospital - that's been going on a few years, so is it a 'tradition' yet? I don't know.
Anybody remember this: "Skol Liquors - Dial Raw Beef"
Also, the Swinging Gates Processional - Battle Hymn of the Republic. (the band has been doing this since the early 60's when Dr. Ben wrote that arrangement of the Battle Hymn.)
This is what I think of...The Rick Flair woooo is cool.
It's tame compared to WI student section's "Eat Sh*t, F*** you!" chantA little factoid. I posted "Who hates Iowa? We hate Iowa!" after Saturdays victory by ISU on Facebook. Folks, ignorance is the bane of this modern society!
Minnesota Rouser. Nothing else even close. Even though a simple three-chord march, it's always moving. What school tradition do you like the most?
This got me thinking. What are our great traditions? Besides the broken chair I mean.
That was a great pregame performance!!Being an ex-band member, I have to go with the cascade sequence during the expanding block M and the "Are You Ready!?" during pregame.
For those that aren't sure what I'm referencing, watch 7:45-9:20 of this pre-game video:

So loud in the Dome when Tapeh scored to put us up three scores versus Michigan late third quarter.Nothing stirs the soul like the rouser.
I remember how loud it was at specific games and after specific goals at Mariucci
I am envisioning something like they do in Boulder with the buffalo...a squirrel roaring out of the tunnel with a crew of guys with reins trying to keep it under control. And, Goldy vs squirrel tho I don’t know if that’s a thing yet. But it should be.
I like it. Could also fold in a Mad Max Thunderdome theme during halftime.I am envisioning something like they do in Boulder with the buffalo...a squirrel roaring out of the tunnel with a crew of guys with reins trying to keep it under control.
Yes!!Kicking wisconsin's ass is returning as a solid tradition.
