I'm starting to come around on Mike Leach, something tells me he might be the shake up we need here at Minnesota. If he could field a good defensive coordinator I would be on board for sure. Could Minnesota nice handle a guy like this? Enjoy :)

Leach would raise the program's profile, that's for sure. However, in roughly 10 years at TT he was never able to field a competent Defense. Why does anyone think that will be different in a Big Ten conference that requires Defense in a way the Big 12 doesn't.

Im starting to lean more of that way.

We need a coach with a big personality to sell this program and give us some attention(good or bad). The likes of Leach/Ryan would be perfect for us. At least we know we will be a topic on ESPN and discussed as a relevant program. The only time we get mentioned on ESPN is after we fire our coach, they rarely show our highlights of our afternoon games.

Please come to Minnesota Leach. I promise to dress as a pirate every day of the rest of my life if you do.

He obviously is a great offensive coach...but he is not a good person. Not saying we need a saint at the helm, but I would, at least, be conflicted rooting for this guy. At the time, I was in full support of him getting fired. But who knows, he may be just the type of ignorant meat-head that it takes to succeed in this sport.

Thats definetly one of the primary concerns. He also didn't change over his staff much in his 10 years at Tech, unless they received a promotion elsewhere.

How would he do with hiring an entirely new staff? Most of his former assistants followed Ruffin McNeil to ECU.

What about Leach indicates he is not a good person? He lives a strange lifestyle(currently living in Florida using a bicycle as transportation) but his demeanor as a coach isn't that far from the classic coaches of the 60's and 70's. Im sure coaches have done worse things than making a disgruntled player stay in a shed to deal with a concussion.;)

Those clips are hilarious and entertaining. My personal favorite is either his rant about his 'players fat little girl friends' or 100% of the last clip.

That said I bet that stuff works because Leach did get results at TT, but I have a feeling it wouldn't go down too well and he'd get run out of town sooner or later.

In all fairness, ESPN has played a fair amount of Gopher football games. Actually given their record, they have been more then fair. Otherwise there really is not a lot for ESPN to talk about concerning Gopher football. Truth is they really have not been a relevant program for quite a while.

Personality aside, I think the concerns about the defense he fields is legitimate. Also, at this time, Leach is nothing more then Media trying to figure our who is their pick and then make it happen. It is way early in the hiring process. I expect the U to look at a number of candidates and weigh the options carefully. As far as I know they do not even have a list compiled as of yet. No need to hurry and hire Leach. It might do well to wait until after the season and get a better idea who is available for them.

I mentioned that. We get their afternoon slot as one of the first college football game of the day typically, but when the day is over they rarely even show our highlights. Maybe show the deciding play, and then the final score. Its a good thing they didnt rub the USD loss in too much.

Im starting to feel like we need someone to step in, provide a bunch of sound bites, become a media favorite, and that brings relevant interest to our program from ESPN. Recruits will see our coach on TV and know who he is. That approach didnt hurt Lane Kiffin at all at Tennessee, until later on.

Hiring Leach would be a terrible idea. Did everyone already forget that he was fired for locking a kid with a concussion in a dark shed? What parent that is worth a damn is going to let their kid play for a coach that neglected this kid's safety especially in a time of increased awareness of the severity of the risks associated with concussions.

He will not be able to recruit anyone.

Let's move on. The University of Minnesota doesn't not need another schools castaway.

Sorry...game is normally on at 9:00 AM out here.

He certainly has his drawbacks

Did everyone already forget that he was fired for locking a kid with a concussion in a dark shed?

I've heard that this wasn't the real reason he was fired. It had more to do with his relationship with the president and they were looking for someway to can him. I followed this whole saga pretty closely and it sounded like James made it a much bigger deal than it was.

No matter what happened, you are certainly looking at a guy with a huge ego that does things his way. He's rough around the edges and would certainly rub a lot of people at the U the wrong way. But he is a discipline guy which I like and more importantly he gets results. I for one think people in Texas respect him and I think he could recruit that state very well.

1) Leach has no business using that foul language with his kids in the locker room; anybody who defends that is a base person.

2) Leach has every right to make fun of his players' girlfriends; anybody who complains about that is a skirt and should be banned from a football stadium.

I hated playing for my high school coach. He was extremely foul mouthed like Leach and I can tell you it didn't motivate me on bit.

These are not kids. These are young men. Im sure if you asked them, they wouldn't refer to themselves as being kids who have to cover their ears up when hearing profanity.

Im sure they've practiced sex by now. Geez. :)

Leach is a guy that I'd be very interested in but I think that he would have to agree to an almost non-existent buyout and he would have to know the ground rules of not being able to pull the 'fat girlfriend' garbage. I really don't think that is appropriate from a professional. I just don't see any great coaches doing that garbage.

So, if he would agree to that, I'd be very interested. He isn't going to get a look anywhere better IMO.

I do think Maturi is a moron and his whole Minnesota nice garbage needs a shakeup.

I dunno. He just seems like a dick. Not in a way like I'm going to say, "oh, think of the children!" But in a way that, if he was actually a great coach, or had real self-confidence, that he wouldn't need to be such a dick.

That is of course arm-chair psychology, so I'll just say the guy rubs me the wrong way. I think we can do better.

There is no way that Maturi hires Leach - so it doesn't matter.

Leach may struggle to recruit. Almost all the Tech players are from Texas. Most of them want to stay in Texas (only state that was a republic, or something like that). Texas, Tech, TCU all have the advantage of Texas talent. Doubt he would have much more luck than Brewster recruiting Texas.

No defense - really, no defense.

Also, followed the Adam James incident. Tech AD was trying to get rid of Leach. Would not attend mandatory meetings (think this is going to work). Not one of the good old boys. Resentment on his big contract. Leach should not have put Adam James in the shed. Seems James was watching practice wearing sun glasses and showing an attitude. Leach wanted him out of there - but did not want him to go back to his dorm. Tech used it to get rid of Leach. If Tech had wanted to keep Leach, the James incident gets smoothed over with concussion awareness training.

I rarely curse - but seemed like normal football language to me.

Agree, if the coach has to be Minnesota Nice - bring back Brewster.

Those videos, particularly the third one, made my work day a whole lot better. The guy has a gift with foul language that Bobby Knight could only dream about.

That being said, the first two vids open with a sportscaster describing how godawful TT's defense was during the previous game. I think one guy mentions them giving up 600 yards of offense to A&M. No thanks, Mike.

Leach may struggle to recruit.

not sure whether i agree with that. brewster proved that you can get the middle tier guys from texas. minnesota nabbed K. Cooper from TT and TT nabbed that RB stephens from minnesota.

with his contacts and brewster showing that you can get those guys out of texas and minnesota being a much better school, i can imagine him probably recruiting texas even better than when he was at TT.

Those of us in Big 12 land are familiar with Leach's antics and eccentricities (most of which are on the smart, rather than dumb side). In a state that has elected Jesse Ventura governor and sent comedian Al Franken (a non-resident) to the U.S. Senate, Leach would be an instant and popular new member of the family. But I don't think Maturi would go for him, given the incident with Craig James's son and Maturi's stated preference for a running-game-first coach.

I'm pretty much the same way. But if he gets the job, I'll be pulling for him.
