Given the UM secrecy in place this could be anything from we were negotiating a contract and he pulled out at the last minute, to someone in Duluth asked if he might have an interest and he said no. He then let it "slip" to a local columnist that he withdrew from consideration.

What's the record for most people to turn down 1 job?

Who knows. And I'm not sure about much with one exception. A few Katz/ameila/common man tweets do not constitute an official offer. Agents throw out most of this stuff. We may never know the truth.

I have a hunch we will have this wrapped up by the of the week. If the week goes by with little in the way of coaching rumors I think we know the target (see final four). That sad. I expect a new coach announced before Friday.

But what if Louisville makes the title game?

LOL....that is humorous...Tubby gets booted...gets a job..........and nobody wants to come here!

Cronin 57-67 in 7 years in conference games. 9-9 and 9th place this year. This sounds like Tubby.

Fwiw. Outside of a long shot with Buzz. I don't think there is a high major coach that has an above .500 conference record who would actually consider us right now. Best bet is mid major coach or an assistant at a blue blood program.

You do realize Texas Tech has gone 16-68 in Big 12 play the past five seasons, right? I wouldn't say that was the most lucrative job out there.

Tim Jankovich? Heard his name today.

Parski is a bit off now. He'll come back around.

Good for Tubby, but they have nothing to do with eachother.

How many more smokescreens does Norwood need to create to do whatever it is he's trying to do?

I guess you'll have to ask Norwood at the hiring presser.

We prefer our hiring to be very clandestine. The more smokescreens the better, in fact, they are more important than the actual hiring.

This could be Cronin reassuring his fan base that he is going nowhere. Something that never happened here in the last five years or so.

Almost a full page with noone saying not to panic.

Relaxfolks. No need to panic. NT/Ellis know what they are doing blahblah blah.
This is the most frustrating coaching search ever, the only news we get are of people turning the job down. Haven't heard a word from anyone associated with the U.

As if this whole process hasn't already been laughable, now the C-Listers are turning us down. First we thought we had a guy in mind because of how fast we fired Tubby. The early thought was we had someone almost locked down and they were in contract talks. Then the myriad of candidates began to turn them down. Including the man everyone thought was to be the "fall-back" guy in Flip. He turned them down because NT thought he could control every aspect of Flip's coaching staff. Everyone seems to be preaching patience, "It has only been 2 days," they said. Now it has been a week, Tubby has already found a new job. More comedy has ensued with Tubby's hiring at TT. I hate to say it, but of the likely remaining candidates, I don't see any of them wanting in on this circus. I only see an assistant coach somewhere trying to get a head coaching job as saying yes to this mess.

If this "story" is true Teague should call Flip back and tell him he can put his whole family on staff !

Wild speculation- Coaches usually withdraw their name from consideration when a hire is close to being made and they are not going to get the job. Cronin wanted to make sure he withdrew before the private school coach from his same city, Chris Mack, is named Gophers coach.

Turning down a job (meaning offered and said no) Is a lot different than being asked if interested and saying no (withdrawing from consideration)

So far its sounds like we have only 1 turn down.

What a moron - no huge extension?

Some would look at a 16-68 record as a problem. Others an opportunity. Mediocre is going to look damn good to those guys.

Ecstatic and depressed

I'm extremely ecstatic Cronin will not be named our next coach!
I am totally depressed Teague and Eliis would approach him. What happens when one these guys about to get fired from their current job accepts our offer? He'll be the Gopher coach for at least three wasted years before he gets fired here. That's just depressing.

Enfield for me fits maybe he can do it. The top assistant in USA college basketball gives me hope he can do it. Mack and Cronin and plenty more like them, and to a lesser degree Grant are proving they can't do it with each season....why think those guys are going to suceed in a place where it will be harder to win...not easier...than where they currently are at?

I posted this a couple of days ago....

"My first post on this site. I have read this board and followed it the last three days and have seen many good post's. I tried to read this entire thread after I got home from work at 930pm, I got through page 14. Here is my take on the news that came out this afternoon about Flip. I understand NT's paranoia about nepotism after Tubby/Saul, but how can you make the leap that you would have the same problem with Flip/Ryan? First of all Flip/Ryan have a real love for this program. Many have said the former AD hired Tubby...not true, Tubby hired himself and brought his son in to coach with him without a passion for the U of M, it was after all a marriage of convenience.

Now we may never hear publicly if NT was exercising his overinflated ego in regards to naming assistant's to Flip's staff (via his sweetheart Villa 7, he thinks he may be gods gift to college basketball) one thing that is certain IMO, if he did put demands on Flips staff it will get flushed out in the coaching fraternity as to weather it's true or not. If it's true forget getting a big qualified name. No self respecting head coach or a highly qualified assistant would work for a AD that micromanages and insists that he have a say in naming his staff. If this is true NT has lost just about every feel good story out of the Villa 7."

If the rumor is true that NT wanted to name the #1 chair for Flip's staff, it has spread through the coaching community like wildfire, agents talk to agents, agents talk to coaches, coaches talk to coaches. You may be right, we may be heading to a D II or a DIII coach that may be willing to except those terms.

When he took the job he had 1 single scholarship player returning and no one had done any recruiting since the previous summer. He rebuilt the program from scratch. His put together his first recruiting class in about 30 days. He has now taken the team to 3 straight NCAA tournaments including a Sweet 16 appearance. His conference record may appear less than mediocre, but considering where he started, it is extremely impressive. Take a look at the other Big East programs that were at the bottom of the conference when he was hired. USF, Seton Hall, DePaul, Providence, St. John's. They have all had one decent season at the most over the last 7 years, but they are all still at the bottom of the conference.
