All eyes are on the Michigan quarterback situation. Will it be Devin Gardner or Shane Morris, as the Wolverines seek to spark a listless offense? The answer: stay tuned.

That was the message delivered today by Brady Hoke, who will continue to evaluate the signal-callers this week in practice as Michigan preps to play Minnesota for the Little Brown Jug this Saturday in the Big House.

“We’ll probably end up later in the week (making a decision on who will start),” said Hoke. “We want to make sure we’re right.”

Figure I'll use this thread to update when they finally do make a decision :)

Ya I figured that, just giving you some grief the way you suckered me into opening the thread. Well done.

Shane Morris was awful. I'd be shocked if Gardner didn't start.

They are both playing pretty poorly Spoof.

I am really hopeful this isn't one of those games where when Michigan plays us, they suddenly figure things out. Seems to have happened a lot over the past few years when we percieve Michigan as having a down year.

There would be nothing better that I could think of than winning The Jug to open the 2014 B1G Ten Season!

Really feels that way ... so of course, decided to look it up with respect to QBs.

2013: Gardner vs MN: 76% completion, 235 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT. Average game in 2013: 60% completion, 247 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT
2012: Gardner vs MN: 67% completion, 234 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT. Average game in 2012: 60% completion, 244 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT
2011: Robinson vs MN: 79% completion, 169 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT. Average game in 2011: 55% completion, 167 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT
2008: Sheridan vs MN: 60% completion, 203 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT. Average game in 2008: 46% completion, 77 yards, 0 TDs, 1 INT

The 2008 one kills. Sheridan had a third of his passing yards for that season against us ... he was an atrocious QB when it came to throwing the ball.

The rest of the QBs generally look average to the rest of their seasons, although the completion percentage is higher and turnovers generally lower than average (what you'd expect from a winning QB I suppose).

Here's Gardner's average game to date in 2014: 64% completion, 174 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT.

Thanks Gopher07!

Without looking up the stats/records, was that '08 game the year that Michigan came into the Metrodome and really surprised us during one of there down years? Weren't they like 4-8 that year?

Yeah, that was the year. 3-9. Michigan finished 3-9 that year. They lost to Toledo and a 4-8 Purdue team, for crying out loud.

Ugh.

We went bear hunting that day, but weren't ready to get the bear....

If Michigan starts Morris and we lose, we'll never win the jug again.

I'd rather face Gardner, aka Tom Harmon. The kid has zero confidence right now, and he's a turnover machine.

Okay, take your pick at quarterback. If we lose to this Michigan team, there is no hope. These wolverines are terrible with respect to other wolverine teams.

Favorite type of thread title, similar to:

I bring the clickbait.

Agree.

Go Blue has never been more ripe for the Gophers' pickin' than right now. I fully expect the Gophers to win, and I can't say that very often when Michigan is the opponent.

Makes sense. Why tip your hand if you're Hoke?

Bolded statement is true, but we are still double digit underdogs...it will be a historically significant upset if we can somehow pull it off. If not, we can still take care of business and make a bowl game. A victory represents a second consecutive fantastic year for coach Kill is in the wings, and a loss is what we all should have had penciled in anyways. This game is really a 'no-lose' for us as long as we do not lose any more players for the key stretch of winnable games that follow.

I don't know that it is a situation where they suddenly figure things out. The years I remember, its not like Michigan played bad football before us, and then beat us as they found their form and went on to play great football. In those years, we made a team that was bad before and after us look good when they played us.

Hopefully we have been hiding some great packages. And they don't have an answer to Strev/Cobb

Except for in 2008.

The Wolverines were 2-7 with losses to Toledo, Purdue, and Illinois.

The Gophers were 7-2 and were an 8-point favorite at HOME in the Metrodome.

This year the Gophers are on the road and currently an 11-point underdog against a Michigan team that is not as bad as the 2008 Michigan team.

Morris or Gardner: it reminds me of when MN was trying to determine if it would be Gray or Shortell.

Which would you rather see on Saturday; a kid who can elude the rush, but is erratic or a kid who stays in the pocket and has a strong arm (yet not much touch on his throws)? Clearly the better athlete is Gardner, but Gardner has torched the Gophers over the past two years. I think I'd rather see Morris on Saturday.

Yeah, that final play of the NW game the week before really changed the course of the season.

Point taken. 2nd most ripe Michigan has been vs. Gophers? At least this time the Gophers don't have an overmatched coach on the sidelines.

I fear Gardner much more than the other kid. We are fine against the pass, but QBs that can break contain have had plenty of room to roam against our defense. I don't see how we can win if Gardner plays. I really hope Hoke tries to over-coach and goes with the other guy.

This is kind of my feeling on the subject as well. I'd like to see Morris start, mostly because of how well Gardner has played against us the past 2 years. Morris is a little worrisome because there's so little tape on him and he was a pretty highly regarded recruit. Early returns haven't looked good though, and he's only a true sophomore who played little his freshman year.
