Michigan’s new QB, Joe Milton, is touted as the next Cam Newton. 6’5” and 245lbs. Supposedly is the ingredient that will supercharge Michigan’s sometimes-anemic offense (to go along with its always good defense). Great arm (70 yards), accurate, and a real threat to run. Apparently beat out Dylan McCaffrey, who will transfer from Michigan. He could be a huge test, right out of the gate, for the new faces on our defense.

Burrow looked like a nice NFL QB. How many times did the Huskers turn him down?

Assume the Cam comparison must be solely based on size because (small sample size) 12 carries for 47 yards and 3.9 ypc average doesn't exactly scream Cam Newton with his nearly 6.0 ypc average.

Not saying the kid won't be a challenge and maybe he is going to be the next Cam but right now in the very limited action he has seen the numbers don't back that up. Like the fact that we are getting him in game 1.

Agree. His limited game action means that he will probably not be using the whole panoply of plays that might be installed later. He will need to get in sync with receivers, etc., in game conditions. First game is best scenario. My real worry is that they turn him loose and he just runs a lot. Like Streveler did against San Jose State. Or like the big QB, Kafka (I think his name was!), for Northwestern, that ran us ragged years ago.

Thanks for posting. Nice to be talking actual football again!

Kid sounds like a physical specimen, and he must have some ability if he earned a scholarship and the starting job at a place like Michigan. Rossi and Co have faced some really good and highly touted QB's the past couple years, so I'm sure they'll be ready to go. I'll say this: I'd much rather face a kid making his first B1G start on the road than a less-talented QB who has a season or two under his belt.

Not just his first BIG start but his first start period at the college level. Should be interesting. Kid is huge so that alone creates some challenges, but I think Rossi will be as ready as possible for them.

And on the flip side, if our offense can do what they do then that will put a lot of pressure on an untested QB to have to make plays and hopefully take him out of his comfort zone.

I hope that we come out with a strong pass rush vs this untested QB. 1st B1G start, against an up and coming Minnesota team, as well as being a trophy game, certainly enough to apply the pressure on anyone. I think if we can get in his head a bit by applying a good pass rush that forces him to holster the ball, or throw some bad throws (early interception/pick 6 maybe?) we might just break his confidence and that would be a huge advantage.

That said, our pass rush has been lacking IMO. I think they have made good progress, but I'd like it to be a bit stronger.

Think we would all like to see more production from our pass rush. Has been a LONG time since we have had a dominant defensive line that could consistently put pressure on a QB.

Would be great to get consistent pressure with just the DL, but I don't think that is realistic. Will be interesting to see what kind of blitzing packages Rossi thinks the unit can handle out of the gate. Will be some new starters, don't want to overload their plates too much. That's a Robb Smith mistake.

Advantage we currently have is good CB play. We can do a little more blitzing and leave the CB's on an island and not get burned. However, the best blizting DB's (Winfield and Williamson) are gone, so it may need to come more from the LB's this year. Maybe Nubin can slide into that role.

DL will be one of the most interesting spots to watch this year. Team lost some stalwarts there in WDL, CC, and Renner, all of whom were good to very good college players. Tough to replace experience, but they'll be doing it with far more explosive athletes like Mafe, Cheney, Anderson, Carter, et al. Super young, but super talented according to everything I've seen and heard. How quickly they develop and pick up the scheme will be a huge part of the team's success. Should be interesting.

Does anyone know whether Braelen Oliver will be available at LB for the season? He is a very good blitzer who might be a big help against Michigan, but I’ve heard he sustained a significant injury this spring.

Yeah, there was that cryptic IG (or Twitter?) post some months ago. Then, nothing. No one has dug around on it. No idea why.
