Michigan Back In The Headlines

the issue involves the question of whether the current players should be "punished" for violations under previous coaches.

my opinion - I am fine with a 1-year or 2-year post-season ban, and some recruiting restrictions. and - lay a big fat stinking fine on Michigan - big enough to really hurt. hit teams with big enough fines, and that might - I say might - be a deterrent to other coaches trying to break rules.

Players can transfer at will. Not a problem, and current players and new players decided to stay knowing a postseason ban is on the table in a couple years. No tears will be shed for them here.

Neither Franklin nor Schiano coach for Ohio State. Pretty much the only people that don't think Michigan cheated are Michigan fans.
No one denied that a former Michigan assistant coach, that was trained by the military to steal enemy communications, used his skills to steal signs. Every college football program tries to do it. This guy did it. He was caught and dismissed. Not one game, last year, was decided by a guy who was fired. Those players, at Michigan, played the same game as their opponents and beat their opponents fair and square. Instead of punishing those players, give them the props they deserve. It's the same thing that should be done for the Gophers 1997 basketball team that went to the Final Four. Those guys got mistreated and wronged when they deserve nothing but praise.

Haters gonna hate.

Tell me you don’t know what makes this illegal and controversial without actually saying it…

This is a violation because of the how, not that he did it. It’s illegal to travel to opponents games and record their sidelines. It’s illegal (and weird) to impersonate another teams coaches and be on their sideline.

If you know the exact play call, that’s a massively unlevel playing field and makes it a hell of a lot easier to call plays and to be in the right positions.

It's like the Astros pitch stealing, but even worse.

He was fired before the season.
Give the kids at Michigan their national championship, just like we give the 1997 Minnesota basketball team their Final 4 run.

No excuses for that coach, but the kids playing for Michigan last season beat there opponents fair and square.

So you think knowing what play the other team is running is fair and square?

I assume he or she’s ok with interviewing for a position but one person gets to know all the questions ahead of time because their crazy uncle who was on the hiring committee told them all the questions and what the company was looking for ahead of time. But it’s all good because he got fired before the interview.

It’s ok to admit it was wrong and tbh, they had the talent on the team that it may have even been unnecessary. But it is quite interesting their rise coincided almost directly with when the scandal was starting. I get what the other poster is saying in that the kids may not have known how it was obtained and that they were just doing their job knowing the signals they were told to know, but to argue it’s not a competitive advantage is just silly. And last time I checked coaches are part of the team and opposing coaches part of the opposition and make just a wee bit of contribution to the results on the field. Not like the players are just going out there free styling it every play

Makes you wonder about the qb stats from that team. Amirite?

In all seriousness that should be the only outcome. The program is rotten from top to bottom, the fanbase is the worst, and what the NCAA already knows is almost certainly the tip of the iceberg. Dead to rights. Coaches running for the hills. Destroying evidence, improper coercion.

People that say the players shouldn’t suffer for the coaches malfeasance are misguided. There has to be some minimal disincentive. Given the lurch towards anarchy in recent years but more importantly TV revenue at stake they’ll probably get a laughable $5M fine.
Rules only apply to schools that aren't huge money makers for the NCAA. and fines just makes things legal for a price

+1

This episode is going to make it really bad for the next mid major school that inadvertently commits some minor infraction through negligence.

Bump - You ain't gonna believe this - Connor Stallions has been hired as a High School Football Coach. Now there's a role model that our young athletes can look up to................

from The Athletic:

Former Michigan staffer Connor Stalions, who was at the heart of the Wolverines’ alleged sign-stealing scandal last season, has landed a new coaching job.

Stalions will work as the defensive coordinator at Mumford High School in Detroit this season, Mumford coach William McMichael confirmed to The Athletic. Stalions is a volunteer and is not being paid in his role. The Detroit News first reported the news of Stalions’ hiring.

“The kids love him,” McMichael said. “He comes to work every day enthusiastic. They call him ‘five-star Stalions.'”

When asked if he was hesitant to hire Stalions, McMichael said, “I never really thought about it.”

“What happens in the NCAA, at that level, really has nothing to do with high school or Mumford,” he said. “It wasn’t a publicity stunt. (Stalions) loves football so much, he didn’t really want to be away from it. … It seemed like a perfect fit because the defense I wanted to run mirrors the Michigan defense and he knows it like the back of his hand.”

Seems like the NFL would be a perfect place for him

Again, the dude was fired before the season last year. You're barking up an imaginary tree. Every team had a new set of signals by then.
The kids at Michigan just were better than anyone else last year.

Again, every team that played Michigan last year knew the allegations and changed their signs. The kids at Michigan beat everyone fair and square.

TBF, I was a hater long before Stallions or any of this 😂
I believe the scandal broke after what, week 8 last year?
Michigan’s sharp increase in success the last 2-3 years begetted a competitive recruiting advantage and on field competitive advantage. If they cheated in this case, and it appears they did, everything after is related.
The Athletic surveyed coaches anonymously on whether this was a “big deal”

If you cheat, you deprive everyone of the opportunity to know what would have happened had you not cheated. Accordingly, it is fair to draw every possible inference against the cheaters.
