If he had gotten the OSU job, we would have been able to hire his replacement from a position of relative strength. A coach moving on to greener pastures typically means he has left the program on a decent footing. It's when you you're looking for a coach because you're at rock bottom that the coaching search is tough. Holtz left the program a lot better than he found it. Gutekunst did have a couple terrible years, but he did also have two seasons with 5 Big Ten wins. Perhaps we could have made a better hire after Holtz.
Mason would have done OK with OSU's built-in advantages, but would he have done well enough to have lasted?
