Charles Barkley did an interview on 60 minutes last night. He was asked for his thoughts about the current state of college basketball. He was depressed about the direction of CBB and pessimistic about the future. He said that within five years there will be around 25 teams who are dominant and the rest will be irrelevant.

Good for them. Nice to see talented individuals who have worked really hard be paid their worth.

Is that too much different than it is now? Start of each season you got 25 teams that seem like legit possible contenders to a title. Then you have another 25 who say what about us?

Still need the right coach and you still need to evaluate talent and character. I don't think it is doomed. It's just going to be played by different rules.

How many John Ruiz's are there? I think many of the power 5's will develop collectives and compete financially for players.

The Yankees don't win the World Series every year but they have the most money by a huge margin.

FAU and SDSU made the final 4. I think parity is doing just fine. And also if you think the same teams weren't paying the same figures before, well then you just refuse to see the truth, it's just out in the open now. College sports will be just fine

If that comes to fruition, then lower the flags to half- mast, as I’m done.

KSU showed the upside of the portal after being victimized- I’d be okay if this was a balance that could be struck somehow ( mo idea how that would function, I aren’t that bright).

Just a few small things. The Yankees haven’t been the highest payroll in the last 3-4 years due to the dodgers and Mets.

Secondly, I think it’s probably somewhat of a threshold argument. Have to have enough to keep and attract your best talent. After a certain point, law of diminishing returns for sure. But there’s a reason in MLB those as or below the average are not contending

You have to be kidding? They all ready receive a $100,000 scholarship Per year. The NIL will be the down fall to whatever is good about college athletics. Sad

If someone is willing to pay them thousands or millions to play for that school, that's their choice.

Which one draws more revenue? Men's or women's?(in Miami's case- I don't know that answer) In my view- it's nice to see the one that draws the interest make the money.

Another nice feature of NIL, especially because most women's hoops players don't have big pro contracts ahead of them.

Clearly they draw interest because they are paid to do so. It’s largely driven by the Cavinders. They make a lot of money.

I think it’s hard to say how much, if any of it, is due to their standing as Miami basketball players (compare their followers to Iowa’s Clark, for example. Their TikTok following existed prior to sports and will long outlast their time playing ball (provided the ban doesn’t happen)

Their tiktok started really taking off in 2020. I highly doubt they started playing basketball at the same time--as they were already playing D1 basketball. They have made more money at Miami than they did at Fresno St. so I do think thats a factor. I also dont know why the miami mens team is getting paid. I dont really care. on the subject of NIL - take this for what you think it's worth -

was listening to Pat Reusse on the 'Daily Delivery' podcast with Randball on the Strib website.

Reusse said that "someone with inside knowledge of the Gopher men's basketball program" told him that....quoting....."the bidding for Dennis Evans got as high as $800,000."

to be sure - Reusse could be wrong - his source could be wrong. But, someone who has a connection to Gopher hoops apparently heard that figure somewhere.

Was more meaning, I give Miami next to no credit for it. These 2 capitalized on things and deserve the credit. They had over a million followers coming out of HS and have struck while the iron is hot. Kudos to them for doing so

Agreed 100%. One of them isn’t even a starter. But they have set themselves up nicely. I am glad it’s allowed to make money as an athlete. This is what I believe NIL should be
