per the Metro West Daily News:
Minnesota was a punching bag. For decades.
Once upon a time, the Golden Gophers were a power, dominant in the early part of the 20th century, winners of back-to-back national championships in 1940 and ’41, and another in 1960. They tied for the Big Ten title in 1967.
And then nothing, some mediocre seasons the best they could do beyond an outlier 10-win campaign in 2003. Few teams have been less relevant over the last 45 years.
While other longtime doormats like Kansas State, Oregon, and Wisconsin have reversed their fortunes, and even lowly Northwestern has had runs of significant success, Minnesota has remained a favorite homecoming guest.
