I was reading his bio on the Washington NFL team's websiter (sorry I think they should change the name) and two things stick out to me as interesting. He earned his MBA from Carlson around the same time Zorn was QB coach here. I wonder if they became familiar with each other at that time. Also, he was a systems analyst before going into coaching.

Aside from those little tidbits his overall story is almost too good to be true from my standpoint. A Minnesota kid who worked his way up from the MIAC would play well in the media. And if he turned the offense around quickly he would immediately be crowned Brew's successor. I'm not saying Meidt is my guy, but if he ends up getting the job, I won't be disappointed.
 



And, he didn't just turn around the St. Olaf program (which has gone right back to its crappy self since he left, by the way), he did so in a unique way... pulling kids from Florida. Nobody will ever mistaken MIAC football for DI but he comes from a football family, actually played the game at the college level (Fisch?) and is all MINNESOTA through and through.
 

There is no way this guy is hired by Brewster. I am not saying that he shouldn't but how many of Brewster's current assistants have Minnesota ties? None that I am aware of. Brewster has been everywhere in the counrty, East Coast, South, West Coast, and he has connections and his favorites from his past. He is not going to hire a guy from around here, just because he is from around here. Also, his job title of Offensive Assistant is basically like a graduate assistant in the NFL. He would not bring in a guy that has that little of prestige. But I do think this hire would be something that Minnesotans would like to see. But it is not going to happen.
 



For what its worth, I have some friends that played football at Bethel College under him. They said he's a pretty smart coordinator, always on top of his game, but he's a total cock. Always talking about himself, how he holds all these state records for QBing, etc, etc. He's got a bit of the little man's disease (he's like 5'8'') and over compensates constantly. Not that it would make him a bad coordinator, just an interesting tidbit from some buddies that know him well.

And look where it has gotten him - continously seeing coordinators come and go through the revolving door.

I'm sure he is looking for the best qualified candidate (ties won't be the top criteria - at least I'd hope not!), but perhaps now MN ties will factor into that decision more so than it obviously has in the past (right or wrong).

Redskins, Chris Meidt part ways

Two years ago at this time, Chris Meidt was an obscure Division III head coach at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. When Jim Zorn, then the new coach of the Washington Redskins and a man whom Meidt had met at several coaching clinics, called to offer him an assistant's job in the NFL, Meidt jumped.

"I loved everything about the last two years," Meidt said Tuesday. "We absolutely loved it. I would not trade the last two years for anything."

Meidt, 40, was informed Tuesday morning by new Redskins coach Mike Shanahan that he would not be on the staff. Matt LaFleur, an offensive assistant with the Houston Texans, is expected to be named to the Redskins' staff within the next couple of days. LaFleur's relationship with the incoming offensive coordinator, former Texans' coordinator Kyle Shanahan, meant Meidt understood the decision.

"Kyle has to be comfortable with a person he's worked with, someone he already has a relationship with," Meidt said. "I've been a head coach. I understand the staff dynamics."

Meidt worked closely with quarterback Jason Campbell over the past two years, and he helped devise the intricate play-calling system - which involved a color-coded system on Campbell's wrist - when Zorn lost his play-calling duties in October and was replaced by consultant Sherman Lewis. Meidt felt his interviews with both Shanahans went well - "I think if he was starting a staff from scratch, I'd have a great chance," he said - and he leaves believing Shanahan will recommend him for jobs elsewhere.

"I'm wide open," Meidt said. "We're ready for everything. The Lord led us here, and He'll lead us to the next step. If it's a college coordinator's job, that'd be great. If it's a quarterbacks job in the NFL, I would love it. I know I'm a better coach because of this whole experience."

Not to be a jerk, but I never said he should hire him because he's from Minnesota. I merely pointed out some interesting things about Meidt and that I wouldn't be disappointed if he was hired.

I would argue Fisch's resume was no better. Meidt has way more experience than Fisch and earned his way up the ladder with results rather than sucking up to the right people. Fisch was just a football nerd concocting a bunch of elaborate plays he could not implement effectively. He has drive and cunning but very little else. Although he may lack prestige, I look at Meidt and I see a guy who is experienced, intelligent, has integrity and real football knowledge. Fisch has led a one-dimensional life and his offense failed to be productive and he quit.

Meidt was a babysitter for Zorn while attending Bethel, that's how they got connected initially.

As far as having him coordinate for the U of M...ish. poor choice. If that's the best we can do, then board it up. Maybe we need to get Dauber and Luther back up here to the Screamin' Eagles. At least those two won a national championship!

That show was classic! I spent the Wacker and early Mason years wishing that the Gophers had a coach like Hayden Fox!

Ha! Wait a minute....You mean he would consider?;) Seriously, Denny Green would be great as an OC, but Brewster would never consider because he would have to look over his shoulder daily. That and Green is a NU guy. I don't think there is much love between Northwestern and the University of Illinois.

Wow. Sorry, I was so blinded by this statement that I had to close the thread and open it back up and start reading at the second sentence in order to find the coherent thoughts embedded in there.

I definitely like the angle of him being a hometowner, but I'm not sure that will be enough to swign the meter. I don't know enough about him to make an educated statement about his competence and attractiveness as the new OC.

Regardless of who is hired, Brewster will get killed one way or another. There's no pleasing some folks.

Yes, this sounds like something that Adam Weber wouldn't have any trouble with, learning yet another system.
 

Just a reminder last D-3 coach on staff was Meyer, former OL coach. He had more D1 experience than Meidt. I'm not a big fan of his double tight unbalanced offense.
 

I would love a home towner that would stick around for several years. But, we must look at his record past D3 head coach. The Redskins had one of the worst offenses in the NFL. The Skin's system, if I'm reading correctly, was complicated, intricate and ineffective. Is this really what we want?

I don't know the guy and do not know how much the Redskins offense was his invention. I could certainly be convinced, but I'll need to be convinced.

I grew up in Minneota and know Chris. This post is accurate. He is confident/arrogant, but he's also a really good guy. It's that confidence that allowed a 5'8" kid without a ton of athletic ability to set the records he did and win a couple of state titles. He did this all while running an offense that he and his dad designed. I played QB for his dad a few years after Chris graduated and it was always a treat when Chris came back to town in the summer. He'd spend a lot of time just hanging out with us and teaching us the ins and outs of the offensive side of the ball.

It's unlikely he'd ever get a sniff of this position under Brewster, but he's someone that definitely deserves a look.

What's Tom Kelly doing these days? Maybe he'd come out of retirement to be the OC for the Gophers, he won a couple World Series for the Twins.

Both sports have a ball and involve running and throwing. Seems like a perfect match, doesn't it? Or sure, some might say that baseball is a sport which is so radically different than football that his managerial skills wouldn't translate to football.
