Meet n Greet

I'll be thurrr. My buddy (that no good positively4thstreet) backed out on me at the last second, so I'll be bringing a date. Nothing says romance like Coach Kill...

Count in me and Highwayman and our wild Gopher children.

Frothy, great to hear you're going to your first GLC event--would love to catch up with you there!

Go Gophers!!

Great to see you, GopherFaith, as well as a bunch of other GopherHolers. I love it when GH'ers introduce themselves to me, it's so fun meeting them!

You guys did a great job of putting this event out, there was a very impressive turnout. Thank you for all you do, GopherFaith and GLC!

What a great gathering. The announced attendance was 275 people and that was easy to believe. It was a very large and enthusiastic crowd and Coach Kill did not disappoint us one bit. He would have answered our questions all night if he didn't have to go meet with the recruits. Coach Kill gave his stump speech and then went amongst the people and gave them what they wanted. The questions ranged from what are the uniforms going to look like to what do you look for in recruits. His recruiting philosophy is recruit the guys who fit your system, who are fast and can jump, and develop them. That doesn't mean he won't take the ready made guys, but more to the point that he won't allow himself to be caught up in the hype that surrounds recruiting. He'll recruit a quarterback and turn him into a defensive end. Next he emphasized keeping his staff together is high priority, because those are the guys who know what you want and build the relationships with the players and recruits. When they leave, you lose recruits. Above all though he said you win with players and you need to get them in your program and build them up. He mentioned more than once that our program needs to build up its numbers and those numbers will be built up by both recruiting scholarship and walk-on players. They recruiting walk ons bug time right now was the impression I got. He related one story from the weekend's recruiting where someone, I am assuming a parent, asked him, "why should he stay home?" He said, because "this is this kids home state." I might not have got the quote quite exactly right, but it was one of the high points of his talk, of which there were many. There were a lot of questions about recruiting and Kill avoided giving too many specifics. He did say that one important thing was recruiting the existing players. He rightly doesn't want to see any of them leave. He said that things were going well and they are hoping to resolve one problem. He mentioned they need to get these guys in the weight program and they really need to upgrade the weight room, which I am in complete agreement with having seen it last year during the signing party. Cell phones are strictly forbidden in Bierman from this day forth. Another funny thing is that they were selling all these photos that appeared to have been up in Bierman. I had to laugh a little because Brewster was in a number of them. Practices will be open, so come on down. Mike Sherels is now on staff. He told me he was there to do whatever they asked him to do. He said the new staff have welcomed him warmly even though they are very busy. He seemed super excited. I can't think of anything else to say other than people left pretty pumped and ready for next season. Kill impressed me as a genuinely warm human being completely dedicated to winning football without casualties.

Meister - really good overview, thanks for the detailed write up!

Upgrade the Weight Room? Will Coach Kill have to compete with Womans Rowing for the money?

Were you her first choice?

Weight Room

Interesting! One thing I checked right away when Kill was hired is that NIU had a slightly bigger weight room ( by square feet)then the UofM and looked like had more equipment in the space.

We cannot take money away from women's rowing. It is the straw that stirs the drink in the athletic department!

How about taking over Ridder and turning it into a weight training facility. I still can't fathom they wasted so much money to build that thing. Nicest hockey arena in the country, but not good enough for the women. With the amount of money and resources they have thrown down that rat hole, the women's hockey team should win the national championship every year and should generate enough revenue to support the other women's sports. :( If we could somehow get a couple of lesbians on the football team, my god how the money would pour in from all big money donors in town, such as the Hubbard's.:D

It was a pleasure meeting GopherLady, GopherFaith, Highwayman and GopherJay last night! What a blast! I look forward to chatting with y'all at Signing Day and hopefully we can walk together in the parade for the GLC in St. Paul. Ski U Mah!

Always great to see you, too, GopherLady! We girls gotta stick together :)

Thanks to you for all your support of all things Gopher!

Astonishing! In one short post, you have managed to turn a very positive thread in praise of Coach Jerry Kill into a bigoted diatribe against women in general, and University women athletes in particular, while at the same time insulting our new coach. I am quite confident that Coach Kill will improve the football weight room without your input or assistance. I thought that we were living in the 21st century, apparently, not in your world.

I apologize in your behalf to all the women that you have just insulted.

Wow...maybe you should proof your stuff before doing such a great job of making an a** of yourself.

Between the 'Brandon Kirksey should be making fried chicken for a living' post and lesbians are somehow destroying the university athletics programs, this site has subtle racism and misogyny pretty well covered. Nice work, mods.

Actually, I'm the person who posted that regrettable remark about working at Popeye's (and later apologized for it). I'm dying a thousand deaths over that one.

My only objection to your citation is that you're misrepresenting what I actually posted. I never said Kirksey "should be making fried chicken." I suggested that a job at Popeye's might be what he has to look forward to. There was absolutely no racial component to the formulation of that comment. I've only been to St Louis (Kirksey's home town) once, and I was unfortunate enough to have eaten two meals at Popeye's while there. Bar none, the worst fast food I've ever had. Absolutely a crime against fried chicken, and I'm a big fan of fried chicken. That's what was on my mind when I posted that comment. My intent wasn't to make an oblique reference to black people and fried chicken, but to draw a line between being unable to take correction and having a disappointing career/life. Wish I had said McDonald's or Burger King rather than Popeyes, because my comment was universally misinterpreted as racial, and understandably so. I was just thinking of StLooMizzou and the awful food I had there.

To be honest, statements like this are far worse. The mis-use of the terms "racism" and "misogyny" in this country boils my blood. Both terms in actuality definition reflect a core belief system by the offender. Most commenters that are labeled with these terms are neither racists nor misogynists. There might be some bigotry involved, but I feel for anyone to label someone a racist or misogynist is performing the same act.

So he is a racist for calling the first guy a racist? Doesn't that make you a racist too?

Wait...am I a racist now???

Lets start this over again
===========================================================================
I met Coach kill and he really is a nice Man.

I would prefer that you call coach Kill a persyn rather than a man.

Wombyn is my favorite made up word. I think we can all agree on its ridiculousness.

In addition to thinking KILL was a nice guy last night, I met Limegrover and Claeys last night. As a big guy myself, I'd like to think the three of us could crush the 60" pizza challenge.

JFR,

The mens team practices in their many times during the season especially when they are not at home that weekend or playing on an Olympic size rink.
