@WesSR910: I've been told by a reliable source that VCU is actively working on restructuring Shaka Smart's contract and working to make it so he(cont)

@WesSR910: stays here for quite sometime. Was told "Shaka wants to stay here." More at 3pm.

@marcdavissports: Can confirm @WesSR910 earlier report that VCU is working to restructure Shaka Smart's contract and that he wants to stay at VCU

Go Gophers!!

Interesting. Plot thickens and all that jazz.

Basically, this just means that he is considering Minnesota or UCLA. I will view this development as positive..

Seems in line with what the Richmond insider was just saying. Talking to both schools, leaning us if he leaves, but definitely has a pull to stay instead.

I find it odd. If there are talking of resturcturing, then Shaka left it open for them and hasn't committed anywhere.

Other tweets (no link) indicating Josh Pastner has agreed to a new deal with Memphis. Take him off the list.

@LaneCBS6: #VCU's Shaka Smart may get a raise, but he's more interested in investments in the overall program. Look for those to be part of new deal

This says to me that the only way Teague gets him here is if he can tell him the money is in for the new practice facility.

That's been my hope...hopefully he is talking to them from here.

I wouldn't be surprised. It's a stretch, but we've heard unconfirmed reports of him at the airport yesterday but nothing since.

Good I hope they throw in as many investments into the program as they can. Those things will help Shaka succeed wherever he lands. Something tells me Teague isn't too disappointed that Shaka is asking for investments into the program as a requirement to sign.

I'll tell you guys one thing Wes McElory is known as a local hack and yes man in Richmond. I wouldn't believe a word he tweets, hes going to tweet whatever gets him in closer with Shaka if Shaka does stay.

LOL...everybody in MN hopes for Shaka...we are going to end up hiring some stiff after we help all these coaches get extensions. This is not looking so pretty anymore.

Shaka is a loyal guy, it's going to either be loyalty to VCU or loyalty to Teague and Ellis. He could do great things here.

we've promised a new practice facility. It's the Big Ten...he'll get exposure. He has an ego like all coaches.

You can spin this information any way you want it, but it does not sound good for Gopher fans.

Also, take a look at the VCU message board. It sounds like everyone over their is spying on our threads. More hits for the GopherHole!

Agreed. Doesn't seem like a good sign. Never know though. Never a dull moment.

Did he used to be in Charlottesville before going to Richmond? If so, yeah, I put zero stock in it...

I'm not sure if its a good sign or bad sign.

But think about it like this: With Illinois, NC State, and Va Tech going after him last season, they restructured his contract last year to make him happy. The MN offer (or UCLA, I don't want to be naive) must be very appealing to him and VCU is up-ing the ante again. My guess is the opportunity he has presented VCU is very good in his eyes. The bad news for sure is he's letting VCU have a chance to convince him to stay.

The good news is that where there's smoke there's fire. No question that someone - probably us - is making a serious run at him and there's serious interest from his end. If this doesn't get done, it won't be for lack of effort from the U's end.

This is how the game is played. I have empathy for VCU. They have a hot coach that will have other schools after him every year it seems. Every year VCU will have to bump his contract or lose him and they may lose him anyway.

This is not the nicest part of the NCAA hoops culture.

That being said, I hope we get him :)

You're 100% right, big time college athletics is a vicious business.

When does this become too much for VCU to handle. This will be the second year in a row that they had to "bribe" their coach to stay! It will happen next year and the year after, etc... until they can no longer pay him to stay. When do you finally stop and just hire the next up and coming coach? It is like us small market baseball teams that can't afford to keep all of the star players.

Not sure why this is even considered "news". What's VCU going to do, just let Shaka go w/o "restructuring his contract"? Of course not. And why wouldn't they leak that they are "working on this"? Should he decide to leave, this only helps with the PR aspect - "we tried to keep him".

I don't view this as good news or bad news - if a coach is valued by a school, this is standard process.

Agreed. Good post.
